Assassin's Creed has stumbled throughout its entire journey.
Assassin's Creed built the core foundation for the trilogy. Assassinate here, engage in combat here, pickpocket here. But what Assassin's Creed lacked was an interesting narrative. Kill here, kill there, kill here, kill there. I found it to be a complete snore-fest, which is disappointing, considering I really wanted to like Altair.
Assassin's Creed II expanded the horizons of the series. It offered new mechanics, a new plot-line, and many more options. Again, however, I disliked Ezio Auditore. To me, he was a pompous asshole who thought he had it all - I'd rather prefer someone who spoke little and did the killing.
I'm not going to talk about Brotherhood or Revelations; since, to me, didn't feel like complete sequels.
Assassin's Creed III wanted to break away from the formula and try something new. Yes, Connor wasn't the most convincing protagonist - however, the brutal and addicting combat made the game enjoyable. Climbing across trees, hanging people, it all looked and felt great. There comes a price, however, it made the combat so incredibly easy - you could basically go through the entire game without picking up (or purchasing) new weapons.
So, yes, I agree that Assassin's Creed III came out with a ton of flaws. However, I liked how it broke away from what it was and tried something new. I honestly don't want another Call of Duty / Assassin's Creed where every year it's the same recycled shit.
Kind of like Brotherhood and Revelations.
I know many will disagree with this. But it's how I feel about the series, so if you don't like it, then go cry in a corner.
