The population is solid but uneven (as in, most people are focused in high level areas where the rewards are the best),
Expect to run into other players from time to time (in GW2 this is actually a good thing rather than a bad thing), but do not be surprised if no one will help you with group events.
As for updates, It gets an update once a month, each update with a major theme or focus (the update that was a few days ago focused on structured PvP). With temporary content as well which is made by a seperate team (Bruno knows better about this than me, so maybe he can explain it better). While I am typing this, there is a dungeon out there that will vanish on the 16th, you will be scaled up to the level it is based around. So you can still do it even if you arent level 80.
So if you are still interested in the game, get it now so you can experience that dungeon as soon as possible :)
Sums it up right now. Except that there is a huge population of players in all the starting areas as well (mainly Wayfarer and Queensdale) due to the dailies.
