Pick up Dragon Quest 8, Star Ocean 3, or Final Fantasy 10....those are all must have RPGs. Heck I could list off about another 20 games but I wanna leave some for othes! ;)
playing the first one is not necessary but it might familiarize you more with the general mechanics of the game. Either way the games are amazing looking and lots of fun.
The depth of the monster breeding is much better. I also am a pokemon fan but since I got the game Wednesday I have had a hard time putting it down. there are over 200 monsters and that is not anything to shake a stick at. Plus the gameplay is so far great, a better story, and amazing visuals set this game on a different level that any pokemon game.
