If you go back to the Red War when Ghaul was interrogating the Speaker about the Traveller, who suggests one method of obtaining the light is to die. Rather sacrifice yourself.
Ghaul was determined to earn the Travellers power until his advisor killed the speaker forcing his hand. In the end he drains the power for himself but fails in the end.
Perhaps thats all he had to do. Sacrifice himself and maybe thats what Savathun will do gambling the Traveller will resurrect her.
