I think I spend around 30'ish hours in the game, I used the heart of anyone I could find and found that it repeated itself a lot.. like apperantly 1/3 of all guards have murdered a noble man and framed their brother. :)
But I too felt that the story was a little too, how should we say it, widespread - what was the role of the ancient civilization under Dunwall? They revered the whales, but why? Are the whales sentinent like it was hinted towards and how do they relate to the Outsider?
In my oponion, this game created a backstory that was so interesting, it actually became a burden to the game, which I guess is, in itself a compliment. I hope they flesh it out further in DLCs there are many many divergent story lines I would love to explore.
noone seems to question Halflife and most people seem to think its the best FPS ever made (although I think its pretty generic :P)stan_boyd
Are we talking about 1 or 2 here? Because to call Half-Life 1 generic is seriously wrong. It singehandedly defined the genre as we know it, it might seem generic now looking back, but that's because all action FPS since have copied, honored, stolen and/or plagarized the core gameplay and story elements.
It's like saying Doom/Wolfenstein was generic for having a first person perspective..
