Rath3rDashing's forum posts
[QUOTE="Rath3rDashing"]My only problem with gamespot is that they cant take 5 mins out of there time to tell the users what is what. It seems to be happening all the time now. If we just had a post saying, somthing like "its cool we are working on it" then there would be no problem. But it seems like its been a day since everything was supposed to be sorted, yet its not sorted and the mods are left alone to try and sort out the mess

They have just spent countless hours over the past few days writing, making sure the site is up, giving us live coverage and more, I think we can allow them the day off. They are all coming back from E3 today, and then it's the weekend.
This is a low priority thing as emblems don't matter all that much, but I assure you they will get to it.
I obviously dont mean the editorial staff, i mean people like jody robinson who im fairly sure is the comunity manager they probably have a few other people comunity staffers who work on this stuff, surely they could make a post simply telling us its cool and its still being worked on. According to there last statement, if we dont already have our emblems we wont be getting them
Im really not that bothered about the emblem at all, makes little difference to me, im just saying that i think this situation could be handled a little bit better.
I'm being patient. I watched all 3 conferences live and haven't got one of them yet. I got the gold emblem for the GS live show fine and that worked straight away. Just worried a little. Thought I'd show my face here to report the problem, but I'm sure it'll get sorted (hopefully!)Cheeg

I don't use the GDM, but it sure seems to get mentioned fairly regularly... It's even got its own entire forum just brimming with issues... You've almost certainly seen these already, but maybe for everyone else's benefit: the downloading faq and the download manager faq. Both of these documents seem to suggest that a difference in transfer rates between using the GDM and not using the GDM is to be expected - probably for all users everywhere. I'm guessing that's kind of the answer to the question... Non 32 bit XP/Vista users - paying or not - seem to be limited to lower transfer rates. They might expand the list of supported platforms at some point... You can take a look around the GDM forums to get a feel for how things are going...g_max_
Yea thats exactly what i was looking for thanks alot :D
Well, there's no Mac version. There's no Linux version either, so it's not just Mac users getting left out. Maybe they'll eventually create a Mac version. Maybe not. I don't know.
Since you don't like having to leave the Mac OS to use Windows, you could use a virtual machine instead. This would allow you to run Windows from within OS X. No need to reboot the computer.
But if you aren't willing to do that, then I don't know. Why did you even subscribe in the first place?
LordAndrew
I subscribed when ages ago when the ftp downloads where there blazing fast downloads and they where once very fast. I could get a virtual machine but again thats going to be taking up alot of memory and since im only using a macbook i dont have all that much, and if im downloading for any lengthy time its just easyer to take the slower speeds instead of bogging down my computer.
All i want at this stage is official word that without the download manager my speeds will be slower or that there is a problem at my end. Im not bothered that they dont support osx, lack of software support is just part of being a mac user, i just want to know if this is a problem at my end or that im not using the manager. Thats all. Nothing else
[QUOTE="Rath3rDashing"][QUOTE="LordAndrew"]You'll get the same speeds regardless of whether you use Windows, Mac OS, Linux/UNIX, MS-DOS, or any other operating system. I doubt the server is really concerned about what OS you use.
But yeah, those are very big files, and you're downloading two of them at once.
LordAndrew
If you read my post properly my concern was faster speeds using the gamespot download manager witch isnt available for osx, im not claiming the server doesnt like osx, im claiming the server doesn like people who dont use the download manager.
In the prefs i have a choice of east or west cost also, but neither are selected.
Meh. I use Windows, but I don't use GameSpot's download manager. If users of the download manager get faster speeds, good for them. But we're still getting the same speeds we always have.
Faster DownloadingWith the Download manager, get immediate downloads and unlimited downloading speeds.
Upgrade page
Sounds pretty clear to me that the faster speeds are only for those that use the download manager..
You have a seperate partition with Windows installed on it? Then why don't you just use that when you need to run a program that doesn't have a Mac version?
Ive been a paying member since before the download manager was introduced so basicly my complaint is i havnt been informed, i dont think its unreasonable of me to have not gone and checked the subscription page since signing up, so how am i to know a feature im paying for is being disabled?
As for my windows partition, i can swap to windows when i want to download but basicly i dont like windows anymore. But even if i decided to grin and bare it, i need to restart my computer to get to windows, which is a pain, i basicly never turn this off.
I cant enter US tournaments, and there has only been one UK tournament since i signed up a year ago, and on the spot hits around 12 midnight so its becoming a bit of a chore waiting around for it, i usually just download it the next day (which brings us back to my origonal complaint). I basicly would like an deffinative answer that this is somthing i cant do anything about or if this is an error on my end. I renewed my subscription in january and i pay yearly, so i have plenty of time to get the answer im after, but basicly this is the last feature im paying for i would like to know if its really worth it.
So i decided to test my download manager theory. This is a screen shot from my windows partition with the download manager installed.I should mention im not on the 20Mb connection i was on yesterday, today im on my mums connection witch is just a 4Mb one.
This is a picture i took shortly after in osx without the download manager.
The is clearly a massive difference. Total speed with the download manager is 460kbps and without is 84kbps from the same connection. Theres obviously somthing going on and if the download manager is the cause then thats fine, but i would like this information to be a little easyer to obtain.
Again thanks for any help
