@gufberg hmmm... i'll have to find the thing. the one they showed was this cube design (where the gabecube comments came from) it was modular, each side had a different component that could be swapped out.
you mean faster? its all custom built parts. so it'll be more efficient. you won't get the bottlenecking you get when slapping components together for a custom pc.
@gufberg didn't they originally say it was going to be proprietary components built for them? I seem to recall gabe saying that when they showed off the prototype at that trade show a year or so ago.
@DeadPhoenix86 the 8gb IS the ram, the entire system will be run almost exclusively off the GPU, making the cpu practically useless. which will only be used for a few basic functions.
@Adavanter the PS4 gpu is faster though. it's memory is 8gb ddr5 memory. those cards cost $2000+. it's also going to be custom for the ps4 along with all the other components so will be optimized for that system. which will make it even faster.
@terminus @joju_australia Actually the current crop of consoles have a ten year lifespan. also, you say10 gens? so that means you had to upgrade 10 times since the current consoles came out? Not very efficient.
The fact is. if you had a machine that could play everything at max settings at the time the xbox 360 came out You would have had to upgrade it several times since then to maintain that capability. Thats the point. in the length of time a console remains viable, on the pc side if you waited that same length of time you'd be better of getting a new machine anyway. in the mean time you have a system that you don't need to do a damn thing with inorder to play the latest games except buy the games.
All this does is shift the burden of graphical power from the consumer to the devolper. Instead of having devs just go hog wild with graphics and say, "eh, they can upgrade if they want to play", it forces them to actually learn and get creative to make their games look better. to clean up their code, find little tricks and things to push the capabilities of their engine to the max. It promotes innovation. It's not just throwing a bunch of cores and ram at it. it's saying, "This is your limit, what can you do within that?" and devs have risen to the challenge bigtime.
@BraeburnMLP @Celldrax I consider all this stuff to be mere distractions, and a bit of fun. I never take this stuff personally, but it can be enjoyable to call out their ignorance. :)
