I haven't been to that site. I've actually never heard of it, but if this is possible, then other sites could do the same thing maybe? The computer I have this running on is kept pretty secure, and I don't use that one to go to "questionable" sites if I can help it since I also run my company off of that machine (actually as a backup machine to my laptop for business use). But thank you for that tip, I will check my history & cookies and delete them just in case one of my kids was using it and "accidentally" went to one of those sites (they are 8 & 2, so I doubt it, but you never know). I am starting to think it is an issue with Windows 7, which to date has run pretty much perfectly for me, but I am guessing that there may be some driver "bugs" that haven't made themselves evident enough yet to be addressed. So time will tell since I have been unable to find any other solutions. Thanks for the tips and advice guys.

That is NOT true. The standard WIRED controller requires nothing other than the DRIVERS to play. The WIRELESS controller requires a WIRELESS RECEIVER, which can be bought alone or packaged with a wireless controller. The PLAY & CHARGE Kit is just a charging system for the wireless controller that allows you to recharge while playing still. It still requires the wireless receiver to play. I know this, because I have all of them.

The 360 pc controllers are crap quality anyways. I'd just get a generic brand one if I were you. In the 6 months that I've had the 360 controller, the d-pad stopped working completely about a month after getting it, then the receiver stopped working completely about 2 months later.guynamedbilly

This is BAD advice, because first, to play Games for Windows games with a controller, the only controller that is guaranteed to work is a Microsoft 360 controller. The licensed copies are the garbage ones. And the copies have a terrible reputation as having not being fully compatible with the PC.
I am sorry that Billy got a bad unit, but as a general whole, the quality of the Microsoft hardware is generally of high quality (except for the 360 itself, lol)

Again, I know this because I fully researched it before being forced to buy both of my 360 controllers (one normal wired one, one wireless with the wireless reciever and play & charge kit).

Any aftermarket controller, even the good ones from Saitek or Logitc are not compatible with Games for Windows branded games. Even using profiling software gives you "wonky" results. As before, I know this because I have these types of controllers. Now, the normal aftermarket controllers WILL work just fine in NON Games for Windows branded games.

You should be aware that Saitek makes a controller called the Cyborg, which is supposedly compatible with the Games for Windows branding, and supposedly compatible with the 360 even. This is the one unit I have not tried.

Thanks, I think I may have tried this, but I'll take a look at it when I get home.

I don't know why I've completely forgotten to grab my error log :?

I'm normally more on top of things than that, lol.

I am running Windows 7, but so far, I'm fairly certain that it is not the O/S, as I've installed many, many games on it and this is the only one that seems to be giving me issues.

But then again, it could be, I'll take a look at the error log and see if it leads me to anything, I'll post it as well to see if somebody catches something I might be missing.

Thanks.

EDIT:

I should point out that unplugging my Sidewinder mouse may or may not have helped, some.

I was able to play for about an hour, at which point it crashed. After subsequent attempts it seems to crash in about 10-15 minutes of play.

I don't know if this info helps or not.

I've been running Crysis for some time now, and the only mods I've gotten were maps, lol.

I really need to look at what else is available for this game. I seem to be missing out on a lot, which is weird, because I have always been heavy into mods for games, just not lately since I've been getting so many of the newer games, maybe need to refocus on what I love most, fan made stuff.

I'll be looking at all of your suggestions, thanks guys.

I was unable to find a topic already on the subject, so here it is.

I installed Kane & Lynch, and it starts fine, but would crash barely two minutes into it.

I have since found out several things:

USB keyboards with media keys are known to cause the game to crash

Microsoft Sidewinder Mouse is known to have issues as well.

the common thread here is USB. Supposedly there is a polling conflict with these items.

I have been unable to find any drivers that solve this.

I did change my resolution from 1600x1200 to 1280x1024, this allowed me to play the game for almost an hour, at which time it crashed again. This time it did save, but not up to the point at which it crashed.

I am going to try unplugging my Sidewinder next to see if it helps (I don't have a media keyboard).

I guess my question is this:

Has anyone had similar problems, and if so, what did you do to solve it?

TIA for replies.

I actually have it.

I got it a couple of years back, but never finished it because it ran like cr4p on my computer.

I now have a moster gaming rig, and forgot all about that game, I should go and re-install it so I can see it in all it's glory.

I do remember liking the game, but like I said I got terrible frame rates on my old machine.

Thanks for reminding me I had it. I'm going to have to go through my collection and see what else I've "forgotten" about, lol.

For something different, try InstantAction

They have a few interesting, free games there, all multiplayer.

For me though, the best online FPS, is and will always be Shadowrun.

You will find a lot of people who hate this game, but when you strip away a few of the idiosyncrasies that this game has, you are left with a very deep experience.

The game relies heavily on teamwork, does use tech and magics in combination, is matched based, first one to win 6 rounds, has a couple of gametypes, and is without a doubt one of the most underated games to date.

The game can be picked up for less than $15 now, in some cases I've heard as cheap as $5, so even if you don't like it, it won't have been a waste of too much money. I say this because some people do give up on it because it has a rather steep learning curve for getting use to the nuances of the game (roughly 25 hours and you should be doing great).

That is exactly the game I was thinking he was describing.

Oh nostalgic feelings are arising, lol, I think I'll pop it in and give it another whirl, I am pretty sure I never did actually finish it either
