"They involved us very early on…they say, 'here's what we're doing, here's what we're planning, here's how we think it's going to work' to hear what we thought," Hines said.
Nintendo did do that. They went to the most important developers there are from Nintendo's point of view (their own) and designed a console around what their development teams said they wanted to work on. Granted its not the best method for gaining third party support but if you look at what games sold the most on pretty much any Nintendo Console, its the games Nintendo developed and/or published that were the most popular.
@grove12345 The 3D and the hinges where the 2 aspects of the 3DS that people complained about the most. With this your not paying for the 3D and there are no hinges improving the durability of the console. Nintendo focused more on its functionality as a console and left its appearance as close to a 3DS as possible with those 2 changes.
@DarkReign2552 @Chico86_basic @damodar_thade The PS4's pre-orders have been confirmed to be beyond 1 million. In comparison the Wii U is currently at 3.6 million and since everyone is so sure that the Wii U has sold next to no consoles since its launch period, it sold 3 times as many as the PS4 is currently looking to sell. MS have kept the X1 pre-orders silent so its probably below the PS4's 1 million.
