If I made a portal device, I'd include safety measures so it couldn't be turned off while obstructions existed. Organic or inorganic. If you could use it to cut, though, think about the perfection of the lines you could make.
It'd be like that cutter-disk thingy in Dragonball Z! The Japanese version with the blood.

I was thinking that. But, wouldn't that happen anyway if they hadn't been previously connected?
The boy explained it this way - the portal is "cutting" a little piece off one end, and putting it on the other end. He says people get confused because they think of the portal as a doorway instead of a two-way teleporter.
