I got my Mario Kart midnight on Saturday, and I spent the good majority of yesterday playing it.
The Wii-Wheel controls are simple, simple to the point where they could be described as "too simple". It took me around one race to get the hand of it. My one major complaint is the sensitivity of the controls, as it seems to be sporatic. There are some points where I need to turn the wheel very hard to make a manuever, and then there's other times where the slightest jerk brings my kart into tough-to-control movements. That's a tad bit annoying.
I also get rather perturbed at the "luck of the draw" involved.
I spent a good bulk of yesterday playing random folks on Wi-Fi VS. I had more than a few times where I was running in first the entire race only to have some jamoke either blow by me at the last second with that ridiculous bullet, or have someone at the back of the pack nail me with that blue shell to cost me my spot and send me all the way back to 5th or 6th place, causing me to lose overall VR points ( which is annoying as hell ).
To me, the weapons should be a solid part of the game, but Nintendo should have a feature available where people who have some level of skill can prevent overall destruction at the hands of someone else. Granted I know if you're far enough in the lead weapon strikes aren't always the end of the world, but in alot of races they have a major negative effect. It's just annoying when someone who I know I'm better than can speed by me at the last lap of a race simply because of the luck of the draw.
I love the Wi-Fi feature, to me it's the best part of the game. My major complaint with it however is the lack of customizability once you're in there. I would love the ability to change my character/kart without having to exit out of everything and reload.
My only real major complaint with the game is the screen set up for multiple players. This may be a unique issue to me, but I just cannot get a firm feel for any track in the split screen mulitiplayer.
Last night for example, my roomate and I were playing multi-player Wi-Fi. I'd been playing single player a good bulk of the day, and had done rather well for myself. I've never made the claim to be the best Kart player, but I can hold my own with most anybody.
When we were playing in the split screen mode, I just fell apart. I went from having constant 1st, 2nd, and 3rd finishes to falling to the bottom of the pack. It wasn't because the racers I was playing against were that much better, I just couldn't get a good feel for the track. I'm not playing on a small TV either.
It was annoying on two fronts ; it cost me VR points, and secondly I just don't like failing.
That may be more of a personal skill complaint than anything else, but I have never had that problem in any previous Kart games. With Wii Kart I immediately noticed last night that I had a much more difficult time playing multiplayer with the split screen than playingt the single player mode.
Like I said, could just be a personal skill issue.
Anyways, all in all I love the game, and anxiously await getting out of the office today so that I can get back home to play it.
