If JRPG meet what is important to an RPG then why can I not call it a RPG?

smerlus

you can say it's your favorite type of game, that you love them but when you start saying they are the real RPG's, that's where your statement stops turning into an opinion and trails off into the false area. I think some of them are real RPG's in fact I would put Ogre Battle over anything Bioware has made in the last two outings.

So basically REAL RPGs are RPGs that YOU think are real ?

JRPGs are real RPGs.

I do not conceder dialog or moral picks as being important in RPG and found the better RPG are the ones with out that.

smerlus

You can like JRPG's more and that's fine but to call them "real" ignores the history of the genre. It would be like calling LittleBigPlanet a real platformer because it has a toolset and that you like that portion of the game.

Wait , you're saying LBP is NOT a platformer ? .. LBP is definitely a platformer just as JRPGs are real RPGs .. just cause games now aren't a copy of the original games that came out 20 years ago that doesn't negate the fact that they can be in the same genre .. otherwise either games wouldn't have evolved one bit or we would have to create a 100 more genres to fit every game with a new take on a genre ..

Anyone can make a JRPG or a WRPG. You dont have to be from the western or Japan to make either one. Its all about the gameplay and design choices. JRPG's tend to have another feeling when playing compared to WRPG's.KalDurenik

The problem with using "feeling" to categorize the game is that feeling can differ from one person to another .. also , a lot of the games nowadays feel a little like WRPGs and a little like JRPGs that you can't categorize them ..

What about "Lord of the Rings the Third Age"

Giving a game the name JRPG because it was made in Japan is silly at best. We does call other cames JPlatformer and WPlatformer.

wiouds

LoTR was made by EA .. there's no doubt it's a WRPG ..

And we don't do that for other genres [ platformers or shooters .... etc ] because they are the same worldwide .. but RPGs were very different specially back in the day so they called it JRPG and WRPG to differentiate them :)

Interesting stuff from everyone .. quite a bit of JRPG hate and stereotyping but I can easily ignore that

So here's my input [ haven't been able to keep up with the topic as I'm amidst my final exams  ] .. Why were the terms JRPG and WRPG created in the first place ? I'm not sure but my guess is that every other genre was almost identical worldwide except for RPGs .. so to distinguish both , they started saying JRPG and WRPG .. JRPG standing for RPGs coming from Japan and WRPGs for ones made in the west ..

By that definition , Demon's Souls has come from Japan and thus it instantly = JRPG .

Also , a response to a point raised here and that is the sty|e . I actually don't think DS has the traditional WRPG tropes . Case in point , Dragon Age Origins supposedly embodies a lot of the WRPG traditional elements . I played that game and couldn't stand it (not my type .. same with fallout ) . So if DS had the same elements I don't think I would've deemed it my GoTY that year . It's very different .

What I think is creating the rift here is the fact that DS is an action RPG .. therein lies the problem .. JRPG are mostly turn-based or tactical or that sort of "SUB-genre" .. so when Japanese make an action RPG , ppl aren't accustomed to seeing that often from them and so they call it Western . But that isn't true . If a WRPG decides to employ turn-based combat that doesn't instantly transform it to a JRPG .

Tactical - Action - Turn-based - Strategy ... those are all sub-genres not genres and should have no impact on the genre .

While talking about Demon's Souls with my friend here Matastig , I called it a JRPG .. this sparked a debate between us .

Demon's Souls is clearly - in my mind - a JRPG since it was made by From Software [
Correction : As rragnaar reminded me .. DS was made by From Software . I made this topic late at night I wrote the publisher Atlus instead]
who are Japanese and have developed it in Japan .

Matastig on the other hand finds this ridiculous and thinks that if a RPG doesn't have some of the usual JRPG tropes ( linearity , quirky characters , influences from old JRPGs like FF or DQ ... etc. ) but instead has WRPG tropes ( more open world , actions affecting the world , more freedom ... etc. ) then it should be called a WRPG regardless of where it was made or who made it ( In other words .. Demon's Souls = WRPG )

---------------------------------------

I asked ppl in my blog about this and most of them agreed that DS is a JRPG . However , the answer wasn't conclusive so I thought I'd ask you guys/girls here in the forum about it ... What do you think ?

Last December I bought a PS3 .. along with it , I got myself a BenQ LCD monitor ( model : G2410HD ) .. It can output 1080p ..

I've been connecting them using an HDMI/DVI cable .. Everything was working perfectly until recently when I moved them to my desk so I can hook my pc to the LCD as well ( through the D-Sub ) ..

Now the PC works just great .. But suddenly , sth has gone wrong with the PS3 ..

BEFORE THE PROBLEM -Ok , everytime I turn on the PS3 and monitor , it has to take a while to figure out it's getting the input through DVI .. even displays it on the monitor ( Input : DVI )

And everytime I start a game or quit a game back to the XMB it has to do the same thing ( Goes black then reappears and says Input : DVI )

THE PROBLEM - This was fine .. but now most of the time if I've just turned on the monitor and PS3 , or started up a game or quit it , it will go black then give me this :

Static

I know it doesn't mean (no signal) because when it says no signal , the screen will enter stand by mode ( green light turns to orange ) .. Also , I can perfectly hear whatever it is that's on the PS3 from the music of a game to the sound of scrolling between things on the XMB ..

-------------------------------------

After a while of this static screen , I think it tries to correct itself or sth .. So it goes black again .. rarely , it works , and everything goes back to normal .. but most of the time after going black , the static screen will re-appear ..

Things I've Tried- Unhooking the pc from the monitor .. disconnecting and reconnecting all the cables again .. Turning the monitor off then on .. Using the monitor's menu to switch to D-Sub then back to DVI .. Putting the PS3 power cable in a separate socket ..

Nothing has really worked .. I'm thinking sth happened to the HDMI/DVI cable itself .. What do you think is the problem ?
