I'm about 3/4 through the game and I love it. This game is a flagship title for why Sony will lead the charge into the next generation -- flawed, but oh so brilliant. The sense of place, the little touches, the incredible cinematic presentation, and at times, movie-quality acting reveal quite plainly why Sony continues to be the industry leader to the progression of video games. I seriously can't wait for the Playstation 4. The flaws, which are many, don't matter -- this is a brilliant work that would NEVER EVER EVER EVER appear on a Microsoft platform.

Is anyone else having problems with the online? I tried yesterday and today to get on but it says saving is disabled because the R* cloud servers are down. So I said frak it i'll wait till it's fixed. I haven't been online yet and would like to try it out so that is kinda crappy. They have a lot of achievements tied to the online and pappy wants some.GodModeEnabled
Don't play it.  Your progress/money/characters get erased randomly and worse yet, it can corrupt your single player save.  Just wait until they fix it.

[QUOTE="Grammaton-Cleric"]

So is the frustration for many of you rooted primarily in the issue of not getting adequate payouts?

I can understand that and I have missed out on making gobs of money as well but do any of you sincerely believe past GTA games enjoyed better and more varied mission structure? Or better ancillary content?

Because for me, GTAV has enjoyed the greatest mission variety in any game I can recall, open world or otherwise.

Also, apparently, those missions with Lester are the key to making ridiculous amounts of cash. A friend of mine had over 300 million dollars when he completed the game.

S0lidSnake

The frustration boils down to the portrayal of these characters. In the context of the story, these guys simply would not settle for little to no pay. They are murderous bastards, thugs and well at least one of them is a psychopath. There is no way they would let guys like Devin, that Mexican Drug Lord, and the FIB jerk them around. There is no way they would do all these side missions with zero pay. I think the only time Ive actually earned money doing side missions is by playing Trevors drug run missions.

Now most games dont earn your money so why is it a big deal in GTAV? Well, this goes back to the unlikeable characters you are mostly doing missions for. You are nothing more than errand boy for these missions. You constantly take shit from these guys and the game becomes a chore to play. Another reason is probably something more controversial. The gameplay and missions are simply not satisfying enough to stand on their own and thus, the player wants something else in return for the game to be more rewarding. Ive spent way too much time doing fetch quests in this game. If I am doing something that trivial and boring, I expect to at least get paid for it.

I agree that this is easily the best GTA game ever made. But then again, I have never found GTA campaigns to be up to par with other SP focused games. The only GTA games Ive finished are the two DLC episodes. I had a blast playing Gay Tony simply because every mission was bigger and more insane than the last. I remember getting bigger and more badass guns in every mission. Especially Yusufs missions. You were always doing something interesting and you never felt like an errand boy even though you were technically an errand boy for Gay Tony. GTAV has too much filler in b/w these awesome missions.

I definitely agree with these critcisms (having finished the game recently, myself).   From the way Michael lets himself be pushed around in the beginning of the game by a certain character to ESPECIALLY the way Trevor takes these crap missions for the FIB for zero pay absolutely created a disconnect with the characters, to me.

MINOR SPOILERS!

To pull off a 20 million dollar job and give 18 million to the FIB and just lie down for it?  REALLY?!

END SPOILERS

GTA5 is still EASILY the best GTA game ever made, by miles in fact, but I feel that the discrepancy in the writing hurt the game a bit.  I'm wondering if the creation of these great characters contradicted the flow of the narrative in some way and compromises were made, but that's my feeling.  The missions themselves were mostly great though -- I can't think of a single story mission that wasn't at least fun -- and some were downright amazing (and there's tons of them).  I feel like the first 1/2 was the best part of the game, and I wish you got money from the heists, so you could buy some property and cool items before the game was technically over.

Gripes aside, still a great game.

God Dvader, your entire impressions/schtick in this thread have been so horrible. No offense, man. You're just normally better.

[QUOTE="S0lidSnake"]

man how do you guys look past the jaggies in this game? I hate how everything thats not directly infront of you looks like shit. The game looks stunning within a block radius, but jaggies ruin the whole IQ.

I am not feeling the 'black gangster' dialogue in this game. It's so over the top and cringeworthy.

CarnageHeart

LMFAO! As the only person here who has any thing to do with being black (I'm 1/3... HipHopBeats may be black but he sucks) I can honeslty say that the dialogue is insanely perfect. Yeah, it may seem offensive to your ass... but guess what? That's how people talk in poor areas of Southern Calfirnia. Rockstar has a record of being authentic... and they don't disappoint here. When I played those segments, I felt like I was hanging with some ghetto ass motherf****ers.

Your complaint about jaggies though is very justified. What the hell do you expect though? Lol! This is 9 year old hardware. It's a miracle, what they do with their tools. :)

I'm completely black. The dialogue and the characters are cartoonish rather than authentic, but that is to be expected. GTA is a parody written by a bunch of British guys which is more influenced by pop culture such as gangster movies and rap music than reality.

Rockstar doesn't have any sort of track record of representing reality aside from maybe in that ping pong game they made. Rocktar has a rep for being fearless, creative, boundary pushing and pop culture savy (nods towards GTA, Manhunt, Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne).

For example, its extremely unlikely hardened criminals like the protagonists would be overpowered by the urge to do weird favors for random people ('You want me to drive around with enough weed to get me put away for life and you want me to do it for free? Of course, person I've known a grand total of five minutes!).

Last but not least, Dvader's explanation for how the stock market works is the most detailed that has been offered in this thread so why are you attacking him for best answering your question?

Very true here.    I'm just reiterating that some parts of America really do sound like that.  Not to insult anyone in the thread, just saying that the dialogue is brilliant.   Interesting to know you're a black man.  :)  Of course, it doesn't matter either way.  You're one of the most intelligent and thoughtful contributors to the forum in it's history, regardless of background.

Secondly, I am not attacking Dvad.  Perhaps I came across too strongly.   I simply thought that he was judging the entire game too soon before completing it.   Of course I've been neck-to-neck with him for the biggest launches of the last 8 years.   Of course I've got respect for the dude :)

Solid since you started just now he off on franklins assassination missions, you have to do the first one but the others you can wait. These missions drastically alter the stock market, wait till you have a ton of money then invest for those missions. I am done with those missions and don't have much money luckily we can still influence te stock market. Gaf and reddit has created a system for everyone to buy one stock, driving the price way up then all selling at the same time. People have made billions like this. Just check gaf for details. http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=687655&page=100000dvader654

I just wanted to add that GTA5's satirical commentary on American society and pop culture is utterly brilliant and has made me stop, pause, and think about the rediculous nature of many of the things we consider our "daily routine", and that's more than any game has ever taken over my thought process.

I feel like I'm probably %90 through the story and I still love the game.   Problems only lie in the fact that, as has been stated, the "Heist" missions aren't as complex or involved as the first, though they are still excellent.   The story missions are by far the best the franchise has ever seen -- always fun (to varying degrees) and involving.  In fact, sometimes they are so brilliant you can't help but he in awe of them.   I find I'm not having as much fun if I rush through the story as opposed to engaging in the sometimes great side-activities.   The game's real brilliance shows through at frequent intervals, but not %100 of the time.  There are story missions that frustrate me because I feel the characters aren't really acting how these low-down crooks should (like Trevor taking shit from the feds)

Seeing as how when this game is at it's best, it's probably as good as any game in history, that's probably not really a strong negative.   The minutae of the game -- Michael's family issues and the writing therin in particular, are the best parts of the game to me.  In fact, Michael's story and segments are the strongest in the game.  Trevor is intriguing but somewhat brings the game down in rare moments -- he veers from entertaining psychopath to flow-killing downer the next.   Sometimes he's almost too over-the-top and evil to be genuinely relatable.

I love his character, but eating people and same-sex sodomy are weirdly over-the-top.  Still. I can't fault this game too much.   Shopping and modding cars are some of the best moments, which is so far, has been a game full-of them.   I should complete the game soon and I'll have more impressions then. :)

I can see this becoming really huge, but I personally have absolutely zero interest in it.  I want a games machine (I don't know how many times I have to say this) to play games.   Not to be my fitness conselour, not to monitor my heart rate, not to give me NFL score updates, not to help me watch tv -- that's f**king right, I just want to play games on it.

Astounding. :P

Does anyone else know this game is coming to the 360 as well?!  And the port is not being handled by Respawn.

My god.

Anyway, I think Titalfall looks great.    It's not my type of game, but I have faith it'll be excellent.   FYI, all the footage we've seen of the game is running on a high-end PC... not the X1.
