It can be pretty much anything. I'd try to reinstall windows first before trying anything else.xsubtownerx

If the PC is freezing even in the BIOS it isn't an OS issue.

You shouldn't have many/any issues playing all of your games on high (or very close to it).

Your CPU speed is low at 2.2 GHz, that is the reason you are getting low FPS.

The first generation of Phenom processors underperformed as well, so I would say it is a cominbation of the two.

The user/OP has a gateway PC though so we can't be sure if they even have the BIOS options to OC the computer.

If your PC is freezing in the BIOS then it is either severely overheating (maybe the heatsink has come loose from the processor a bit) or something else is seriously wrong (power supply, possibly). Not too much else would cause freezing, especially in something as simple as the BIOS screen or at the screen where you would choose Safe Mode.

The system isn't horrible in itself, with a decent card it should be able to play any game that is out right now, just without a ton of eye candy. If not, then most games that came out a year or so ago would be fine

Can the OP please change their font color back to the normal text, it is nearly impossible to read with the dark theme.

The 6950 is a fantastic card (just installed and flashed mine on Friday, actually) but if you are only gaming at 1280x1024 I don't think you will notice that much of a difference at such a conservative resolution. It may be worth saving/upgrading to a nicer, bigger screen - something 1680x1050 to 1920x1080 (between 22'' and 24'') to be able to take advantage of what the newer cards have to offer (those size screens can be picked up for less than $200).

Ram has little importance and really is an afterthought but you need 4 gb of ram

James161324

So as we were saying, having too little RAM will hurt your performance, but if you aren't filling up your RAM you won't notice any difference if you increase it (for example if you never use 6GB of RAM, going to 12 won't do you any good).

make sure the screen is off as well (laptop/monitor is turned off)

It is also possible (unlikely, but possible) that moisture got under the screen and ended up with a watermark behind the LCD.
