If the game doesn't support the resolution either one of two will happen: it will play with two bars on the side with a set resolution in the center or it'll upscale the image and stretch it on the screen. I know that my brother's laptop GPU (an NVIDIA) and my own computer's GPU (an ATI) support upscaling through the DVI port.

What performance where you getting before?

On a side note, sometimes getting the latest chipset update from your motherboard's manufacterer can fix problems on newer hardware. I'd update as many hardware components as I can before doing anything too drastic.
