I've been wanting to share my views on RPGs and other games for a while now. I would ask that you take this post seriously and don't start deprecating my views or those of others, if they happen to diverge from yours. Thanks!

I like RPGs that give you the power to choose your own destiny, your own character's/characters' appearance, and their skills and everything related to that. Lately, I've been feeling that RPGs are going down the drain. By that I mean that RPGs are often very shallow. In my opinion, games like Skyrim and Fable III are terrible. They don't contain many interesting quests, the characters are pretty much as flat as they can be, and even the loot could use a lot of work. Generally, the only things that are half decent about those games are their soundtracks, and the size of their maps. What happened to RPGs that allow you to play the role you want to play, rather than the role assigned to you?

I think games like Dragon's Dogma and Dark Souls are quite nice, though. At least in those games, you can find a lot of weapons and armor as loot, whereas in Skyrim I remember killing tons of enemies and bosses, only to receive my fiftieth nord war axe (oh, but this time it's enchanted with 20 fire damage). In Skyrim, If you want to wield a weapon that's weaker than your current level, you're going to be fighting one enemy for half an hour. I wish RPGs would do away with the damage status, and adopt a system that makes each weapon very close to each other in power. Then you can finally focus on how your weapons look, how much they fit your character, and what effect they have (bleeding, crippling, how fast they are, etc). Perhaps add some legendary weapons that actually are very powerful. Done.

I've got a lot more to say, but I'll leave it at that for now. If I don't respond, that may be due to all the work I still have to do. Thanks, and feel free to talk amongst yourselves if I don't respond.
