In Russia case their main focus is artillery. Albeit, antiquated and not very good, not taking into (and in many cases purposefully) hitting civilians.
In Ukraine case from the opening of the war they had a focus on drones, they are cheap, you're own people are safer and can be used also for scouting. They didn't have the resources to match Russia, it was a good option and (from what I can tell reading) has changed perception of how warfare works as sometime so large scale hasn't been seen before.
Now Russia has shifted to adopt this with far more focus also. Albeit (again) targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Basically, even if have bone problems or even wheelchair bound, as long as you have working eyes and a pair of hands, you could potentially be useful.
