Because they have E3 on their hands and UT3 is on two different platforms, they probably assume people can draw conclusions of what to expect. They are right to do so.
I have the game and have played it. Want my opinion? If you don't, oh well. I'll give it anyway. :D
The single player is fun, in that it has intense action and gives you a great feel of what to expect from multiplayer. In fact, this is one of its biggest problems. It isn't a campaign, it is a series of glorified bot battles with a cut scene at the beginning and end of each of the five "chapters." This is just another way of separating the tedium of back to back bot matches.
The dialogue, oh god the dialogue. It is terrible, at best. I several times laughed out loud at how cheesy the writing was, and how atrocious the voice acting is. The plot is not much better, emo-ruthless-sociopathic race of killers called the Necris slaughter the main character's colony and nearly kill him.
So begins the tale of revenge. By the way, the main character's name is Reaper. Was that the best they could come up with? Unfortunatly, yes. Though much of this "campaign" is rife with cliche, it still packs great action over its relatively long lifespan.
Before I get to the graphics I want to address the audio aspect of UT3. The sound effects are good with solid and sharp distinctive tones for the discharge of all the fun and varied weapons. Though something about the sound is just not right, in the campaign the music and the voices of the characters seem to either be way too loud or are barely audible. Because there is no dialogue in multiplayer, aside from that of other players (or lackthereof*) this is not so much of a problem in multiplayer.
*Lackthereof is self explanatory, but I will elaborate. I had a very hard time finding games. If you play unranked matches you will probably encounter three other players, with the rest of the match being occoupied by bots. While the AI is solid in UT3, this is rather disappointing and makes for a lonely and honestly boring experience. If you want to play a ranked match, then you will have better luck finding games. Full games in fact, unfortunatly very few of these players use a mic; and of those with mics, only one or two actually speak.
Back to the visual side of things. The game is beautiful. I can't stress that enough, it is in my opinion the best looking game on the system bar none. I still have rug burn on my face because my jaw was hanging to the floor while I gaped at the outstanding detail in the environments and weapons.
The game is fun. It is not a terrible game, but it is also not a great game. Sure the vehicles are fun, though the design of these is a bit uninspired. The Dark Walker is ripped straight out of War of the Worlds and the Necris air vehicle nicknamed the "Fury" is almost identical to the sentinels of the Matrix movies. There can also be fun in performing tricks on the hoverboard as you race across the expansive battlefields, yet that hardly warrants a strong reccomendation
On paper this game sounds excellent, but in practice the execution is severely flawed. UT3 brings nothing new to the table and with a lackluster single player experience, uninventive gameplay, and tiresome multiplayer Unreal Tournament 3 amounts to a game that may be best described as decent. If you are a hardcore Unreal fan, then perhaps this is worth a rental.
At least there are achievement points.
