It's an unofficial patch. I finished the game and the expansion (oh, about 38 missions in total) some 15 days ago without a problem. Not sure if saves are going to be compatible, you might find the unofficial patch saves somewhere though (or if you want, I can upload one for you) and it should be fine seeing how the original doesn't have difficulty levels.

Try the "Run in 256 colors" compatibility option too.
