As the year draws to a close, it's the right time to celebrate the best gaming music that came out in the last 12 months. I'm an avid fan of video game soundtracks in general and I firmly stand by the fact that music is of one of the most important aspects of a game when it comes to creating immersion and atmosphere and arousing genuine emotion. 2013 has been a fantastic year for game OSTs so feel free to share anything that stood out for you in particular.

Here as some of my favorite tunes from the past year:

The Last of Us - Main Theme - Gustavo Santaolalla

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon - Power Core - Power Glove

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - Under The Black Flag - Brian Tyler

Grand Theft Auto V - We Were Set Up - VA

BioShock Infinite - Elizabeth - Garry Schyman

Loading Video...

Payday 2 - The Mark - Simon Viklund

Mass Effect 3: Citadel - The End... - Cris Velasco & Sascha Dikiciyan

There's no point in listing overrated games here simply because for each one of us they're different. It's all a matter of taste and preference. This doesn't differ from arguing about which music genres should be considered good and which bad. In the end you just go on listening to what you like no matter what people say.

It's between Forza and ACIV. Honestly, whatever game wins, they shouldn't call it Game of the Year. It's more like game of the month.

Am I the only one tired of seeing Half-Life 2 grab the Nr.1 spot on every single "Best PC Games" list like this one? I never understood the hype around this game and the praise it still gets. I could never ever finish it because I just couldn't force myself to play it anymore. I mean, it's a great game and a groundbreaking one, especially for 2004, but best modern PC game? I'd argue with that. It would be okay for me if it was the first game instead since it left a considerably bigger mark on me.

Yep, putting Half-Life 2 at the top of every "best PC games" list is silly, and downright annoying. One of the main reason why mainstream sites suck at making lists is that you always see the same goddamn games at the top of them. It's like mainstream gaming sites have some sort of hive mind. Best game ever list? Alright, Zelda: OOT is #1, done deal. Best PC game? Half-Life 2 #1, easy game!

I'd like to see a mainstream site have the balls to put Half-Life 2 at #23. Because honestly, if I really had to make a list today, I'd put HL2 in the honorable mentions, and not even on the main list.

I'd also like to see more editor-specific lists. That would bring a lot of flexibility and possibly make more people happy. Same thing goes for reviews and game of the year awards.

Mass Effect 2
I still remember the first time I went through the Omega 4 relay pretty well. I was literally shaking of excitement. Few games of the past generation made me feel that. The fantastic soundtrack made that moment ever more epic. But then ME2 is much more than just that: It is a game that puts the main story in the background to pave way to a more personal experience with arguably the best characters ever put in a video game. The way I bonded with them and the way I cared for them is just something very few games make me feel. Mass Effect 2's other big merit is successfully blending the RPG and third person shooter genres intro one cohesive whole and making it effortless to play and understand.

Did anyone mention Red Dead Redemption yet?
The game and especially the ending makes you think about whether one can escape his past or not. I thought Rockstar weighed on that pretty well.
Also, there's Spec Ops The Line. The game itself is pretty mediocre stuff but it's probably the only plausible depiction of war and it's effects on people in video games.

i'm surprised there's no such topic here.

In order on not, I don't care. Make it one game per series and only include game that you've actually played. What were your favorite games from the 2005-2013 period?

Ok, I'll start.

  1. Mass Effect 2
  2. Fallout 3
  3. Heavy Rain
  4. The Last of Us
  5. Red Dead Redemption
  6. Grand Theft Auto V
  7. Assassin's Creed II
  8. Skyrim
  9. The Witcher 2
  10. The Walking Dead

The game that had the most "soul" in it : The Last of Us. GTAV is probably the better game in terms of gameplay variety and lasting appeal but it just didn't grab me the way TLOU did.
