Is there any death metal bands that are not repetitive and have awful vocals like Cannibal Corpse, Cryptopsy, etc ? If so I wouldn't mind giving them a shot. I don't mind Opeth, but I tried listening to Job For A Cowboy (latest album, which is apparently death metal now), and it was just repetitive, boring, and gave me a headache. I'm open to suggestions.Zaeryn

Job For A Cowboy is terrible in general. They're deathcore, by the way. I assure you, most "core" bands in general (unless they're oldschool) usually suck. My guess is you're not into screaming vocals, which is understandable, I just eventually got past them as I listened to milder Melodic Death Metal then learned to handle with it, and eventually I actually liked and appreciated them (as alot death metal vocalists are actually talented, believe it or not).

Try listening to some Progressive Metal: I recommend Porcupine Tree (though they're more Progressive Rock), Disillusion, Dark Suns, Dream Theater, Novembre, Orphaned Land, and Riverside.

Anyway, if you're just trying to get used to screaming vocals, Opeth is a good start, as he does excellent harsh vocals and the clean vocals balance it out at times. After that, try looking into Melodic Death Metal, as it's generally much more approachable than death.

Burzum (Last 2 albums)

-Austin-

I thought Varg's earlier stuff was much better. Weren't his last 2 albums like electronica?

They weren't Electronica, they were just Ambient. I liked them, actually. They're not for everyone, but they're great albums if you don't mind the repetitiveness or slow pace of them. I thought most of his earlier stuff was trash to be honest. I mean, every once in awhile he wrote something good, but alot of it was just generic and didn't give much of an influence to Black Metal in general. His success was more of a matter of the publicity had from his crimes than his actual music.

Here's a list of bands and musicians I like. They aren't all Black/Death, but most of em are...

Since I'm tired of users here listening absolutely terrible bands to start out with, I thought I would lay down some great bands that could easily get you into heavier forms of metal.

3 Inches of Blood, The Absence, Agalloch, Alcest, Amon Amarth, Ancient Wisdom, Arcturus, Arsis, At the Gates, Bathory, Behemoth, Behind the Scenery, The Black Dahlia Murder, Bloodbound, Borknagar, Burzum (Last 2 albums), Carcass, Catamenia, Ceremonial Oath, Children of Bodom, Dark Fortress, Dark Lunacy, Dark Moor, Darkthrone, Dark Tranquillity, Death, Dimension Zero, Dimmu Borgir, Dissection, Dødheimsgard, Dragonlord, Dream Evil, Eluveite, Equilibrium, Emperor, Enslaved, Ensiferum, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Eucharist, First Reign, Finntroll, Firewind, Forest of Fog, Forest of Shadows, Folkearth, Gates of Ishtar, Graveland, Goatwhore, Gorgoroth, Graveworm, I, Ihsahn, Immortal, In Flames, Insomnium, In the Woods..., Iron Maiden, Kalmah, Karl Sanders, Korpiklaani, The Kovenant, Kromlek, Limbonic Art, Lord Belial, Maleficentia, Mercenary, Michael Angelo Batio, Mors Principium Est, Mithotyn, Naglfar, Nile, Nebelhorn, Necrophagist, Norther, Noumena, Old Man's Child, Origin, Primal Fear, Quo Vadis, Satyricon, Sculptured, Sentenced, Shape of Despair, Sirius, Skyfire, Soilwork, Subterranean Masquerade, Swallow the Sun, Theory In Practice, Thrudvangar, Thyrfing, Turisas, Tyr, Unanimated, Vesperian Sorrow, Vinterland, Vintersorg,Weakling, Windir, Wintersun, Woods of Ypres, Wolfchant, Wolves in the Throne Room, Yngwie Malmsteen... just to name a few.

Terrible bands.

You're an idiot.
I don't care if this is flaming, because what you did was basically the same thing, as you provided no insight whatsoever to your post. You have no right to judge music, because if you think those bands are "terrible," you're obviously not a musician yourself and have no knowledge regarding it.

lord_mordain

Opeth = Progressive Metal

c'mon people, I don't even like them and know this

skullkrusher13

Yes, they are Progressive, but there are different forms of Progressive metal... And they most closely resemble Progressive Melodic Death Metal.

[QUOTE="Zaeryn"]Is Opeth death metal? Because whatever they are, I don't mind that genre.Squire_Ramza

Well, they're basically Progressive Melodic Death Metal. Every once in awhile they do something experimental too, and their new album shows alot of jazz influences (it's a great album, by the way). One of my favorite bands! :D

You'd know better than I would, I've only heard them twice. I don't really enjoy them.

Ah, well that's understandable. They're definitely not for everyone, especially if you're not into Progressive stuff. Plus, they can take awhile to grow on you, and alot of times they go a bit too soft for alot of metal fans.

Ah... So many choices...

APPLE JACKS!
I love Apple Jacks.
But really, it all depends on my mood.
Right now I'm really wanting some Frosted Mini Wheats.

Cinammon Toast Crunch is amazing by the way.

Try metalcore first like As I Lay Dying, All That Remains, and Killswitch Engage..

Then try some scandinavian metal like In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Soilwork, Amon Amarth, Wintersun, Children of Bodom, etc.

yasser34

No..
We had a nice streak of good advice going there, and you just ruined it!

The first three bands you listed are all generic garbage that managed to single-handedly ruin hardcore music and change it into a failed attempt at being heavy.

I respect your bottom line of bands, but come on, your sig has the cover of the WORST In Flames album ever released... BAD! Listen to Jester Race, Colony, and Whoracle, then we'll talk!

I started off listening to emo/ screamo stuff. I'd suggest thats what you do because otherwise you won't appreciate the screaming in metal. A couple really good starter bands are Every Time I Die, Underoath, Thursday, Alexisonfire. In my personal opinion, the best metal band is Between The Buried and Me. You should download either Alaska or Colors, some really good songs are Selkies, Croakies And Boatshoes, White Walls, Prequel To The Sequel, Alaska, The Primer and the list goes on. All of the intsruments are really spectacular and Tommy Rogers is an excellent vocalist.

Paul_Waggoner

NO NO NO.

I'm sorry, but that's terrible advice.
All of those bands you listed are girl metal, and once you fall prey to them, it's difficult to get out. Any modern "core" music mainly has guitar riffs ripped off At The Gates, and the bands themselves have very little talent (though Alexisonfire writes decent songs compared to most of the mainstream stuff out there). I've given hardcore/screamo a fair chance, and the first wave of hardcore was great and innovative, but now it has turned into a complete pile of crap.

I like Between The Buried And Me, they're certainly talented, but Tommy Rogers is a TERRIBLE vocalist.
