Metro 2033

I love the atmosphere. I love turning the voices to Russian. I don't love the gameplay, but I also don't mind it. What I hate is the save system. This is a game where scrounging for ammo might take 5 minutes, whereas alerting a group of enemies and being shot dead takes about 5 seconds. That's fine, but having to go through the 5 minutes of scrounging each time I die in the 5-second firefight is what I call a hassle, not challenging and certainly not fun. I quit before finishing Chapter 4, invoking Wolpaw's Law. 3/5

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

I can fully understand why, in 2004, it was suggested that this was the greatest game ever made. It's aged horrendously; it has bad combat, ugly graphics for a PS2 game of the time (on PC no less), several terribly-designed missions that almost made me quit early, and a final mission that pushed me over the edge. I uninstalled it and watched the ending on Youtube. But I still got the San Andreas experience, and really liked it. It's the fun of occupying a vast and detailed world, not the story or any of the structured content, that's really worth it. It's driving down the street going nowhere, listening to Ice Cube or Ronnie Hudson or putting on SUFR because DJ Hans Oberlander is hilarious, going past the clothes shop you were aiming for and ending up in a part of town you've never seen, where the pedestrians look different and say different things. You're like a pretentious backpacker, only you have a car and kill people. 4/5
