Personally I think it's very engrossing when done right - it's why, for example, i prefer the second KotOR game over the first despite the first being a technically better game. TSL had more shades of gray and you were able to construct a more complex, sophisticated character rather than choosing between a conscientious do-gooder or a murderous bastard, which seems to be the choice in most other games aswell. I love role-playing but feel unable to do so when the choices are so shallow.
