I agree with you, I've also long been an XCOM fan. The game was good, with plenty of room for improvement. I would also liken it with mass effect.. Maybe with a dash of LA Noire..
I agree with most of Kevin's points here. I still think the review score is 0.5 -1.0 on the low side though.
The atmosphere, character acting and combat carry the game. Personally I found the story telling excellent. It takes it's time and lets you get your money's worth. Play it on Veteran mode, the combat is a challenge but not ludicrous.
The big let down for me was the lack of involvement in R&D, engineering, squad management and other things that made XCOM great. (And of course the totally dogsh*t friendly AI, This should have been sorted.)
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go, I have a planet to save.
It is VERY possible to review a game and put your own spin on the review without being out of touch with the masses (and not my view as you mention.) In fact I'd say it is essential if that's your job.
Inferior was perhaps not the best choice of word. I meant to say that the game is obviously not worth the score it has been given. You are going to be a busy boy if you are going to pick holes in every post on the internet. Try and read between the lines next time.
If you think this is a good review I have little time for you, it's a joke, like surgeon simulator and a host of other out of touch scores lately.
@btrbree A lot of people will jump on your comments no doubt and try to explain the point of view of the reviewer or justify the score. But you are bang on the money. This review/score is absurd.
I believe that Gamespot need to change the way they review things. There is too much personal opinion in gamer reviews and the scores vary wildly depending on who reviews them. Perhaps they need at least 2 reviewers for every game. Or just show some common sense (think about others who will be playing the game and buying product based on your review) and don't stick a 9.5 on an obviously inferior game.
Making sense as usual Danny. I have never really categorised myself as a hardcore or softcore gamer, but given the sheer number of games I buy and the amount of time I spend playing I guess I'm guilty as charged Hardcore all the way.
