Went straight to CC after graduating high school. Didn't know what I wanted to do and took gen ed courses for a year and a half. Then I transferred to a university to pursue Physics and added a Math degree.
As for string theory, you might find it "lame", but that doesn't change the fact that it's widely accepted by most leading physicists today, theist and atheist alike.
