I think the Vanguard stays true to its previous role. Charge + Nova is a high risk high reward tactic. You can take down a lot of foes quickly by charging in, hitting them with nova, and finishing what's left off with your shotgun, but if you miss a few, face a tougher enemy, or a turret you'll probably find yourself in the middle of its field of fire and end up dead. Especially on higher difficulty levels I think playing as a Vanguard will be a real challenge.Lone_Warrior_66This. I recently got my Vanguard up to level 17 as well (and I started two other characters, so I now have a level 5 Soldier and a level 2 Adept too). Vanguard has always been my favourite since ME2, and the cIass still rocks in ME3 multiplayer. If you know how to use the cIass and make the necessary risks to sometimes get up close and personal for effect, you will be overpowered as long as you know when to back off. Go too far... and you'll die in a matter of seconds when running against groups of enemies. On the other hand, if you stay hidden all of the time and only peek out when it's safe to shoot, you'll guarantee yourself not only the longest survival time but also the worst score on your team; and you'd waste all of the Vanguard's potential.
In the end, it's best to get out there and use your abilities to, well, the best of your ability. :P But always make sure that you are not too far out in the open, that there's always a safe piece of cover to retreat to nearby and that none of the enemies (which aren't in front of your field of view) are trying to use any side routes to flank you. However: if you choose the Vanguard and want to utilize all of that cIass' potential, be prepared to die... many times. This is because sometimes it's just impossible to flee once you're too far into the battlefield. Also, since not everyone you get teamed up with is actually a team player, gather as much medi-gel as you can and don't waste it. If you see a team member close by after getting wounded, even if they're getting their ass kicked, give them a chance. If there's not enough time left for them to revive you or a Cerberus trooper is just about to stomp on your face, use the medicine and keep killing.
As for the weapons that best suit the Vanguard; well, a shotgun (as described by Lone Warrior) is great for his deadly combo. I was using the assault rifle the most often, but after unlocking a very powerful sniper rifle I switched. Now I'm actually doing a lot better than I used to. If you'd rather not get close to enemies too often, a strong sniper rifle and Phalanx pistol weapon combo is perfect. A well-aimed shot from the rifle I unlocked (sorry but I can't remember its name) can kill most enemies from any distance. A "Nemesis" will go down after a headshot. If a lesser enemy is dangerously close, switch to the pistol and dispose of them in a few clean shots to the upper half of the body.
