That's crap and you know itThe cover is the MAIN way a game gets noticed on the shelves. That's why they put the games facing front in the stores on shelves that vary in height so each cover gets as much visibility as it can. Otherwise stores would stock the games sideways with only the titles showing on the spines. That would allow more room for the games to be on the sales floor.
Most people are drawn to box art. The box draws them in and then they read the back of the box. You're under the false assumption that everyone researches games before they buy them? Even at a gaming site like this people don't research games, hence the "WUT GAMES DO I GHET?" threads we see every hour.
This cover is crap and does nothing to draw a user in.
Also this isn't the main character in the game. It's a poorly drawn representation of a character who is supposed to be the main character in the game. It a bad picture.
Like I said before, this had better be a placeholder until the real art shows up.

Brown and gray are the colors of the new millennium, gotta love the 45.000.000.000.000 games which use the same friggin' tones of brown and gray. Instead Platinum Games tried something new in concept and style, now they're just going on with the style they chose by making the cover like that. You seem to use a kind of backward logic, a cover completely black & white is gonna be the one which will get the most attention from people, because it will be the weirdest one in the bunch.
Besides one thing is to say the cover is not that good, on the other hand you just seem to spit poison at it just for fun, using words such as "garbage artist", "the art itself is crap". I'm sure you can make a much better artistic work, right?
Finally if they wanted to sell games to casuals and nothing more, they would make a compilation of mini games with Sonic with a cool colored cover, not a game about a Manhunt-like reality show where the graphics are in manga/comic flavour.
Of course they wanna make money, but they're trying to do it with style. Mad props to them.
