@markypants Mark, prettiness of the tiles aside, and iPhone similarities aside, my real concern is as a game player. What happens to game interfaces should Microsoft decide to try phase out the mouse & keyboard in favor of touch screens? OK, sure, nothing will change in the short-term. Battlefield 3, for instance, will be released for Windows 7 and will obviously have support for all modern keyboards and mice. But let's say 10 years further down the road, MS pushes much harder on touchscreens as being the preferred way of interacting with your desktop...where does that leave Battlefield 5, or Civilization 7, or Diablo III? (See what I did there?) If PC and keyboard end up stuck with unreliable legacy support in favor of MS pushing hard on touchscreens, I don't see why game companies would bother trying to put the next Doom or the next Battlefield onto a platform whose control scheme wasn't up to the task. And the problem I was getting at is that Microsoft doesn't seem to care either way.

To clarify (and also repeat) some of what I said: I don't think for a second that the keyboard and mouse are going away anytime soon. However, this push to move the OS to touchscreen functionality suggests that longer-term, MS may choose to go in a direction that focuses more on touchscreens and less on mouse and keyboard. Maybe not today. Maybe not next year, or two years from now, or even five years from now. But maybe later on down the line. And I don't like the idea of that, especially if no other, better form of PC game input doesn't emerge by then, and there's no sign of anything even remotely resembling that. It's a concern for me, and I'm pretty sure MS doesn't share that concern, which is probably what's most worrisome for me. Microsoft has proven that it doesn't care at all about PC gaming and is doing its best to catch up to the iPhone with Windows 7 Mobile. PC games have given us real-time and turn-based strategy, first-person shooters, massively multiplayer online games, and the absolute best RPGs ever made. I don't like the thinking about the possibility, however remote, that PC gaming may eventually end up being a bunch of tower defense clones and Fruit Ninja XXVII: Electric Boogaloo because developers abandon support for a platform whose control scheme can't handle much else.

@Lox_Cropek Unfortunately, it's hard to see how all of that won't happen. I'd be genuinely shocked if a pirated workaround for the offline restriction didn't come out within a week of the game's release. This wasn't the right call on Capcom's part.

A lot of work went into this story and it shows.

@drummerdickens As I mentioned, the Firaxis team gave me a few courtesy turns at the beginning of the game, but those guys did exactly what they should've done. Destroying me utterly in multiplayer to show how it's done by an expert player, and how a real game tends to work. Besides, if you're going to get completely crushed in a multiplayer game, I can't think of a better way to go than at the hands of the lead designer who knows the game inside and out.

Currently, voting is available for the 10 wild card spots, which you can find in the "Vote" tab from the top. Psycho Mantis is available for voting and might make it in with your support.

FreeSpace 2 is probably still the best one out there. Good luck finding a copy, though.

That's it. The votes are in and you, the faithful, the fans, the readers of GameSpot, have decided on the single greatest game hero of all time.

You have decided to << LINK REMOVED >>

GameSpot offers its heartiest congratulations to Gordon Freeman, the hero of the Half-Life series, and the winner of this epic competition.

We also extend our congratulations to user << LINK REMOVED >>, the voter with the winningest bracket!

For those who came close in their brackets (and those who didn't), we here at GameSpot still offer our sincerest thanks for participating, and for making this a lively and spirited competition. You may not have won, but we still salute you anyway (just to a lesser extent than we salute << LINK REMOVED >>, who again, had the top bracket in the competition).

To help take the sting out of the agony of defeat, please enjoy one last video victory lap for our winning hero, Gordon Freeman. In a way, all game heroes who entered the competition are winners. But in another, more accurate way, only Gordon is the winner.
