@DawgByte2 Normally, I would agree. But if you look at the author's credentials (PhD in Economics from Cornell), there's definitely some merit to be had from his argument. At least more than some random poster/fanboy on internet forums.

@songoku0206 @ARsignal11 @BelaidKL It's part of it, for sure. I'm not disagreeing with you, persay. It's just the route Nintendo decided to take. I don't know their financial situation, but the general consensus is that Nintendo can't afford to make a powerhouse of a console and still succeed as a business because that's the only business they are in, as compared to Sony and Microsoft, both of which have other avenues to generate money from. And quite frankly, have different long term goals than Nintendo. And because of that, 3rd party developers will publish their games on the more powerful systems. Nintendo has decided to take the route where quality games and *unique* gameplay experiences will always be at the forefront of their games. Which is fine. However, 3rd party developers don't seem to have an interest in trying something new like Nintendo. They don't seem interested in spending time to understand the unique ideas Nintendo has implemented. And the best way to get those experiences are largely from first party titles. And hence, that is part of the reason for my initial comment.

@songoku0206 @ARsignal11 @BelaidKL A typical, troll-like insult. Great try, but I'm 27 and grew up with the Atari and NES as my first console experiences. And good job comparing the climate from 25 years ago to what we have in today's world. You can't do that. Gaming was COMPLETELY different back then and there were completely different variables and circumstances than what we have today. There are just so many choices today for 3rd party developers and publishers. Sure, its been well documented that Nintendo has trouble with 3rd party titles, but the general consensus of gamers today is that people play Nintendo consoles because of their first party titles. You actually see this type of response a lot from the PC gaming community. They buy a Nintendo console for their IPs and a PC for everything else because it will always be the best platform as far as the best technology being available. It's a statement mentioned by many gamers.

@hector530 @ARsignal11 It wasn't completely dead, but definitely on the way out with the focus more on the Vita. But you're still completely missing the point. To answer your question, there is competition for the 3DS. And even so, for the point of my argument, 'competition' is not even a variable. People buy the 3DS because there is something they want to play on it. There wasn't much in the first 2 years. Enter the last 6 months and the next 6 months. Quality titles people want to play. Again, its that simple.

@BelaidKL @ARsignal11 Exactly. And you'll see the same with the Wii U when Smash Brothers and "X" are released as well. The problem with Nintendo is that people buy their consoles (and handhelds) primarily to play their first party titles. For everything else, there is Sony, Microsoft and the PC. There really is not other great incentive to buy a Nintendo console outside of their first party titles. The main problem is that Nintendo has trouble getting those types of games out during consoles launch windows. The Gamecube sold very well to begin with primarily because Smash Brothers Melee was a launch title.

@hector530 @ARsignal11 What do you mean by no competition? You have the PSP and the Vita, alongside the ever evolving games on tablets and smartphones. If you think those don't count as competition, you clearly need to do more research about the market. Even with all of that, its a simple correlation to see. The first 2 years the 3DS was out, it wasn't moving as well to an extent where Nintendo had to drop the price within the first 6 months or so! That's a huge thing! Once games started coming out, the 3DS is selling very well.

The 3DS had the SAME EXACT PROBLEM. For the first 1.5-2 years, there were no games that people wanted to play and therefore, the 3DS was not selling well at all. Enter the last 6-8 months when you had top quality games released one after another, with another subset of great games coming out in the next 6 months. And what do you see? The 3DS is all of a sudden performing very well. Gamers buy Nintendo to play Nintendo IPs. Once those games come out (Zelda Windwaker HD, Zelda Wii U, Smash Bros, Metroid, and especially the new X title from Monolith Soft., etc)., I promise you the Wii U will start moving consoles.

@torres_unix First you say Nintendo has been milking their franchise (Metroid included) and then in the very next sentence you say you want a new Metroid game?

Exhibit A of why you see Nintendo always going back to their franchises.
