there's been nothing to confirm it will come to pc - but there's been nothing to confirm it won't come to pc... with the exception of the stories, every gta game has hit the pc - but since 3, it just takes a little longer

till rockstar comes out and says no pc version, assume there will be one - just a little while after the consoles get their fill

if memory serves, san andreas wasn't even announced for pc until it was already out on ps2

id has been ousted in the gameplay department and ousted in the technology department, that's why they've run off to make games for consoles - so they can be someone again - pfft

i think the original dooms are some of the greatest games ever made, but id's time is long passed... i'd like to give id the benefit of the doubt and assume that they still have their mojo - but they don't

Don't say "Titan quest is a Diablo clone", because in that case all FPSs,RTSs, MMORPSs and etc. can be called clones. Just think they came out at the same time. I don't think Gamespot should've rated Titan Quest lower just because it was the same genre.DarkRecruit

early in the genre's lifespan, first person shooters were called doom clones - that was the official genre name

and it was legitimate - because that's all most of them were... it's only when first person shooter games started evolving and developing and moving - in technology and gameplay - beyond the boundaries of doom that the genre earned a name not affiliated with doom - it no longer applied

i think it's fair to apply the same rationale to diablo - i mean, think about it... ever play gauntlet? would it be fair to call diablo a gauntlet clone? it's certainly inspired by gauntlet - but it's so far above and beyond that you can't even sit down and compare them, besides at a fairly fundamental you kill stuff in dungeons level... besides that, diablo is bigger, better and more evolved in so many ways that you really just can't compare them

can the same be said of titan quest when comparing it with diablo? personally, i'd say no - i think it's a fine game, but i also think it's a diablo clone... it's not until games start to better the genre, to do new things in new ways and to distinguish themselves that they becomes more than a clone, and i don't think titan quest, great though it is, managed that on any level

that said, it's just that there's so few entires in the hack n slash genre, and so few good ones that diablo 2 is just engrained in everyone's brains, we think of hack n slash and we think of diablo, - and as it's also the best the genre has to offer - it's only natural to compare all entries in the genre with diablo 2, given that it's the current pinnacle of the genre's accomplishments

hellgate will get the same treatment, but it's actually doing new things in new ways and offering a totally new take on the genre, so even though the game reeks of diablo, people don't make that automatic diablo clone assumption - and that's what titan quest is missing out on... originality - they took an idea and flat out copied it, quality is hardly the issue

don't get me wrong, i don't have a problem with copying, with inspiration - i think the expression "ripped off" is a misnomer... everything is based on something, inspired by something - stolen from something... diablo is just an updated version of gauntlet, gauntlet is probably inspired by d&d - it goes on and on back for decades (centuries, even - if you want to get into the d&d/lotr/norse mythos thing) before computer games even existed... but the point is, titan quest didn't do anything new - and the genre itself isn't somehow limited - just look at hellgate, the possibilities for the genre are enormous... and yet what did titan quest offer that was new?

other games in other genres, even full blown clones themselves, will usually bring something new to the table - but titan quest... i admittedly didn't play the whole game, but from what i saw and read - it just did the same thing in a new way... diablo clone might be too harsh a term... but what else are you going to call it? it feels just like diablo - and at best gave us different ways of doing the same thing... what is there to truly distinguish titan quest from diablo in the same way that diablo stands head and shoulders above gauntlet

if you were to poll every pc gamer out there, i think you'd find results like this:

20% consider consoles to be toys for kids, and refuse to play them or acknowledge them as legitimate games machines

25% acknowledge consoles as decent machines where applicable, and can enjoy playing them - but generally don't use consoles either due to lack of appeal or some other rational, legitimate reason

50% has at least 1 console that compliments their pc gaming

5% of pc gamers feel that if the industry stays the way it is, they won't be pc gamers by the next console generation

wild speculation, of course - but my point is that you simply cannot generalise, there is no yes, no or maybe - it's a bit of everything, and it all balances out

just like any thing, not all people are the same - there will always be people who think consoles are below them, and console gamers are mindless sheep - there will always be people who own consoles and pcs

are we elitist? i'd say some of us are, but nowhere near a majority

[QUOTE="A-S_FM"]

diablo 2 was released around six years before vista, it wasn't built for vista - asking why d2 won't work on vista is like asking why your old key won't work when you get your lock changed

that said, it definitely can run in vista - try running in a compatability mode (does vista even have compatability modes?) or just bypass the error if possible (you might be able to acknowledge the error and play anyway?)

checking the official diablo 2 forums would probably be a smart move - specialised forums are always the better place to look for problems, if you've encountered it - chances are many other people have too, which means there's probably an official or unofficial faq/what to do that you can find with a few minutes of clicking

Alkpaz

System Shock 1 was not made during XP.. it was made in the Win 3.1 era.. yet it runs. .:)

Bad analogy..

But I have heard D2 works in compatability mode in Vista.. So possibly DosBox will soon run in Vista :)

yeah, there are exceptions to every rule - some games work fine, some games don't work at all

which is like getting a new lock that is the same model as your previous lock, and while new, your old key still works

i hate being so pedantic, but i like my analogy very much!

it's my experience with nearly 2 decades of gaming that whether it's pcs or consoles or a mixture, you tend to spend about the same no matter what - given a long enough timeline, it all balances out

pc games are much cheaper, they last much longer - console hardware is much cheaper, it lasts much longer (assuming you like to stay on the technological speartip)

if you're a hardcore gamer, you're likely going to be buying 12-20 games per year - that right there is a price discrepency of upto about £300/$600

and that's your upgrades more than covered

i find console games generally too shallow, with short lifespans and little to no replay value - no real depth... so, when i am console gaming, i have to buy more and more and more to keep myself entertained - and they're so damn expensive now that you can easily spend a small fortune in games without even realising it - the only real bypass is to rent almost everything, or to just sit and play a couple games all year

still, i think it's pointless getting into arguments about which is "better" - it's your money and it's your time, and rationalising it is pointless - there need be no loyalties... the more fun option wins

come, bothers, let us sit and join hands and pray togerher - pray that the lord will send a giant meteor filled with space spiders directly to the bethesda officers, and those few who survive the meteor blast will be eaten alive or be made into nesting grounds for the space spiders

amen

can't generalise, one pc gamer may love sports and fighting games, or japanese rpgs - and feel he needs a console or two as well as a pc

another pc gamer may just like fps, rts and rpg and think of consoles as toys for kids... we're a pretty diverse bunch

personally, i feel i need great games in genres i love - so far consoles haven't really hit the mark there... i mainly like fps, rts and rpg - and all three are just much better suited to pc gaming... consoles are getting there, and stuff like the wiimote and the ps3/360 mouse (if and when) show that consoles are moving to a point where they can better support pc native genres, as well as the fundamental genre shift already moving along...

... because we're seeing more fps, rts and rpg games on consoles with developers like valve, id, epic, irrational, bioware, the c&c team, ensemble and more looking to consoles, and with the controls hopefully moving to catch up - soon i think, as a fps/rts/rpg pc gamer, that consoles may very well be worth owning... probably not this generation, but next for sure...

right now, though, this particular pc gamer doesn't need a console at all

simply cannot generalise, though
