Really what's the difference? The purpose of a forum is to share information and strike conversation between people that share similar interests. A union only takes this one step further with an extra layer of depth by adding a front page where articles in blog fashion can be posted.

Unions haven't been surfaced in the main navigation on this site for years, yet people still find a way to keep them alive. Perhaps it isn't the best idea that anyone can create a union. I do believe if this was a premium feature for paid membership gamespot would have much more luck with people not having to sift through dozens of crap unions. Also owners of the boards would be much more inclined to stick with their union since they are paying for the service.

Yes, unions have problems, but it really seems like a waste for them to neglect them further. As long as people still go to gamespot, there will always be demand for user created forums in some fashion. Might as well fix the system you already have than make a new one from scratch.

I've been going to this site for quite a long time now. I now work in the game industry and a large part of that is because of Gamespot.

I've come across a lot of people here on GS wanting to get into this industry but just not knowing how to do it or what to do. Finding and harnessing the skills someone has to bring to the game industry is a much more complex process than staring at a few motivational blog posts. People need to network, gather resources and start getting their hands dirty as early on as possible. The fact of the matter is, this biz ain't no fun and games. It's cutthroat, hard to break into, and much smaller than most people think. I know the staff of Gamespot knows this.

That is why I am making a proposal. An official Gamespot endorsed Game Industry Forum, Union, or possibly an entirely new section of the site. A place within Gamespot where people of varying experiences can help each other in finding, obtaining, and maintaining their dream of working in the game industry. Believe me, I know this is a very tall order in the web development world. We all have busy lives and deadlines to meet in this industry. I am willing to work with Gamespot in doing whatever we can to bring this idea to fruition with whatever resources it has to devote. Even if those resources are very limited.

I do realize that there are places on the web suited to working in the game industry already. I believe GS has a chance to really reach those interested in a game career path while also getting others re-invested in the GS community at the same time. I wouldn't be proposing something this outlandish if I didn't truly believe Gamespot was the best place to make it work.

I know this is a long shot...but if anyone at on the GS staff reads this and is interested, please just send a pm my way. Thanks for your time.

Same here, but if it gets more people to come back and use them, then I can easily make the switch. Unfortunately there are probably some people who don't share the same mindset and may leave as a result, so it's a tough call.

It would be nice to be able to have a 'retro' option along with the revamp or something, but not everything can be optional.

I don't think that's going to happen because then GS would have to support two versions of the site for every feature they released or tweak they made. I'd rather them convert Unions to the new style if that means it's easier for them to keep adding features to them.

Couldn't find the old "Unions 2.0" thread so I thought I'd ask about this again...

It's been 6 years, people are still asking for union updates. No matter how hard you try to ignore it, the demand won't go away, only the users will. These aren't even crazy asks. Just the ability for them to level up again would be amazing or just some way to get rid of the graveyard of unions stuck at the front via surfacing more active unions. Or how about just surfacing the unions in the main navigation (under the "forums" tab) so that people can actually find them?

I do understand that unions are/were probably too expensive for gamespot to support (given that they are completely free for anyone to create). I am willing to pay for a monthly gamespot membership for the privilage of running a union, and I know there are many more out there willing to do the same. Heck, I'll even work with gamespot in giving feedback for a union reboot. I know there's a way this can be done right with compromises on both sides.

We're really not asking for much here. You can even rebrand unions back to user created forums if that makes you feel better. I beg, anything, any little update what so ever would greately help this feature. At the very least an explanation of why gs refuses to support unions.

Thanks for your time.

EDIT: It seems GS has restored leveling up and badges to the unions after being disabled since 2006. Please voice your opinion and let GS know their further work on Unions is much appreciated.

There's no way to search for forums without knowing exactly what you want. Would be nice to have the list of categories under forum search so you can stumble upon forums like before.

Obviously you guys are in the middle of an update. Just making sure this gets implemented because you might as well take away user forums if you're going to practically hide them.

I personally think that at this point it's more likely that they'll scrap unions than revamp them.SoraX64
Sadly I think you're right...

I've done a little research but it seems forums as a medium for discussion are kind of dieing (correct me if I'm wrong). I'm wondering if GS forums are the most popular out there right now?

As many GS users have, I too am waiting for Union updates.

Unions have been BROKEN for YEARS. Yet 4 years later people still rally for support behind them. Is GS even listening???

Used to work with this guy that was one of the most socially awkward people ever, but he invests so much into his online social life via facebook/twitter that he's a minor internet celebrity.

Myself, am ok socially, online I say I fair the same. I'm not an attention ****, but I do enjoy making online relationships with random people that share the same interests.

Which side of the Social spectrum are you??
