Konami, the clue is in the title.

The biggest change in the PES control system since I started playing ISS & PES 4 in 2002. Normally every year Konami introduce a few new moves and tweak other elements of the controls to enhance and evolve the game play. Not this time. They have made massive changes across the board resulting in a completely new PES experience. An experience I am sad to report, which is clunkier, slower and just not as fun.

The new focus is on individual players and their close up skills using direction and body weight to pull off the required moves to get close to goal. The right stick now becomes essential to pulling off any meaningful football moves. Team passing is much more difficult and while possible to learn it just doesn't feel as fluid and satisfying as the PES we know and love. Konami have added a layer of complexity to the game in attempt to make play deeper and more sim like. They have failed. You no longer feel there is a true connection between you and the ball. It just doesn't feel snappy and smooth like PES 13 or 12.

There are some nice improvement such as advanced through ball using an on screen cursor to plonk the ball into free space. Thrown ins are faster and quick free kicks have been improved. Keeper controls have also been enhanced, in particular the dummy throw out being a nice touch. The graphics are highly detailed and feel next gen but the player likenesses aren't convincing. Going by 2013, the PES community will do a much better job in the coming weeks.

Some of the moves you can now pull off do look impressive and give a sense of accomplishment. Perhaps over the next few weeks I will learn the new control system more thoroughly and get back the fluidity of the old PES. I'm not convinced though - the whole game just requires much more effort to get to the same playability levels as previous versions. If I wanted to learn a new soccer game I'd have bought FIFA.

Another annoying aspect is the lack of community mode removed in 2012. Konami now ask you to take a picture of a screen and upload it to the stats data base to record your games. Really Konami? This new "enhancement" and it's unnecessary complication is typical of the changes made across this year's version.

You can still have fun with PES but all the new stuff to learn makes it frustrating for old players and a high learning curve for new. It remains to be seen whether spending a lot of the time with the game will give the same buzz as the last few years of PES. Konami have lost their way with 2014 and need to take a few step backs for 2015.
