Darker and more difficult part two in Sands of Time trilogy.

User Rating: 8.3 | Prince of Persia: Warrior Within GC
Part two in Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia trilogy is longer, darker, more difficult and more frustrating than its predecessor.

After making things right in the end of Sands of Time the Prince returns his home back to Babylon. Unfortunately by opening the sands of time he should have died, so now he is chased by Dahaka, a mystical beast of time who is to make sure that the Prince is dead. To undo this Prince must travel to the Island of Time and set things right with the Empress of Time Kaileena. Story is much more complicated than what it was in Sands of Time, but the main thing is that you will travel back and forth in time while still staying in the same space (Island of Time) the whole way through.

Graphics are noticeably darker this time around and that charming fairy tale tone is gone. Environments look cool for the most part, but since your going through them at least two times it eventually becomes a bit repetitive. Sound has also been replaced with a heavy metal sound track by Godsmack. They do a good job, but I enjoyed that Middle-Eastern feel a lot more. Prince himself is now much older and somewhat arrogant brute instead of that elegant noble man in the Sands of Time.

Gameplay is very similar in regards of rewarding acrobatic platforming, but combat has seen some changes. Now you have many different combos to choose from and this means A LOT more fighting in Warrior Within. Combat system works pretty well actually, but when you’ve just been platforming for half an hour it’s extremely annoying to find yourself in a middle of a challenging fight sequence BEFORE you’ve have had a chance to save your progress. At times this is been done even worse by setting save points way too far apart from one another.

Because the Prince is been chased by the Dahaka, at times he will show up and this triggers a fast paced chase scene which offers a nice change in the overall gameplay. Unfortunately Dahaka sequences are rather difficult culminating on memorization: you will die as many time as it takes for you to remember the right path. Prince of Persia: Warrior Within is about twice as long as the Sands of Time lasting somewhere around 20 hours. But personally I enjoyed previous game more than what I did Warrior Within. It’s the story that drives you to keep playing till the end.
