Fiddly Controls Makes Jack A Frustrated Boy

User Rating: 7 | Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time PS3

Let's clear this up, I do enjoy this game and have played the console versions on the Nintendo GameCube, the Sony PS2 and the HD port to the PS3. I shall be reviewing the PS3 HD edition as that's what many people are going to be playing it on now.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of time is a lush journey throughout a gorgeous, yet crumbling Indian palace that your father has conquered. You, the Prince, claim a dagger as your prize of victory only to be decived by the Indian traitor who helped your country invade India in the first place. You unleash the sands of time and it turns everyone but you, the Vizar and Farah, the Indian king's daughter into sand monsters. It's now up to you and her to use the sands of time to your advantage to undo what you have done.

The Prince and Farah are very likable characters and you really feel invested in the two and their developing relationship. You even start to share the Prince's feelings towards Farah of compassion and paranoia as you don't know if she will use the sands to her advantage too.

Now, one of the worst things about this game it the combat. Not only is it dull, but pulling off essential moves such as the wall bounce can get so fiddly and leave you jumping into a pit causing an immense amount of frustration. There's also the camera that constantly gets in you way not only in combat (a lot when you seem to be low on health)but during key moments with platforming that leads to an unnecessary death. Also, whilst platforming you'll find a lack of depth of field. As in you think you're in line with a pole, make the jump just to find out the camera has deceived you and you are now dead.

Luckily, all my above complaints with death may be forgiven since you can rewind time so you can redo what you just did. There's also the ability to make time slow for easier combat.

Overall, story is great, characters even better, controls fiddly, platforming fiddly but addictive when you learn from your mistakes.

Oh, the sound seems to go loud whenever it wants and lacks impact when the environment falls apart.
