A fun twist on puzzle games with Pokemon tossed in.

User Rating: 8.5 | Pokemon Puzzle League N64
If you're a fan of the game Tetris, or really, the puzzle genre as a whole, you'll enjoy experiencing a new type of puzzle game with your favorite Pokemon characters tossed into the mix.

Pokemon Puzzle League leads you into the world of well, Puzzle League, where you are given various choices on what you can do. There's 1P Stadium, Spa Service, Time Zone, 2P Stadium, Marathon, Puzzle University, Mimic Mansion, Professor Oak's Lab, and Pokemon Center (Lab is just a place to view tutorials and Center is the options menu). Each mode allows different types of gameplay, and others allow you to practice your skills and learn new ways of clearing blocks.

Unlike other puzzle games that have you simply switching blocks around to make 3 of the same pattern match up to clear them, Pokemon Puzzle League also offers a new twist: 3D-style puzzles. Instead of a square-shaped puzzle area, you now have a cynlinder-shaped area that you must clear all around to keep the blocks from hitting the top of the puzzle area. While you won't see 3D in the 1P Stadium you'll see it in the later levels of the Spa Service and some levels are made more difficult by this.

You choose your own difficulty in Puzzle League, with some being unlocked only by clearing other difficulties first -- Your main objective of the game is to go through all the gym leaders and then defeat the 'boss' of the gym leaders at the end, gainign the trophy for that difficulty. While this may seem repetitive, the small increase of difficulty as you move up the difficulty ladder makes the game fun and challenging at times.

In terms of graphics, Puzzle League is fine for the type of game it is. The colors are fun and bright and the beginning of the game starts out with a small fully animated scene from the anime, rather than using the N64 graphics to make one.

If Puzzle League was one of your favorites during the N64-era then it would be well worth the money to grab a copy, if you can find it for cheap. If you've never played it before, you may want to try a game similar to it before you go out and spend the extra cash for this fun game.
