A strong attempt to bring the MMO genre to the mobile platform. Foundations are set in stone for a great title.

User Rating: 9.5 | Pocket Legends for iPad IOS
I was relatively skeptical when I took a look at some of the MMOs currently available for the iOS platform, and rightly so. The majority of them are pretty crap (poor graphics, not much content, you get the idea). So when I came across Pocket Legends (by chance) I had low expectations from previous experiences.

As opposed to picking up the game, I downloaded it off the App Store (for free) and ran it on my iPad. Boy was I surprised. As soon as the main menu popped up, through the character creation, the tutorial, 3D gameplay, everything reminded me of World of Warcraft and Guild Wars. Albeit on a much smaller scale.

There are three races available with tied classes to each 'animal' - Archer, Mage and Warrior. While the customisation of character generation isn't spectacular, or comparable to the big MMORPGs available today, the range of items available that can be equipped by your character is enough for a small degree of individuality.

The tutorial is pretty quick and to the point, explaining different parts of the HUD and features available in easy-to-digest chunks for either newcomers to the platform or newbies to RPGs altogether. Completing quests given within the tutorial, the player is eased into the world ready for main quests offered by the variety of NPCs located at multiple locations (townes).

Instead of open-ended gamplay in one huge environment (like World of Warcraft for example), Pocket Legends takes the approach similar to Guild Wars. There are games that are created and can be any campaign level or PvP activities (including capture the flag - yay!), which players can join at any given opportunity. When not in a game, you are situated at one of the safe havens (townes) that contain portals and NPCs who can provide quests and/or services.

Combat - one of the main factors of any MMORPG. Grinding, grinding, grinding. Pocket Legends features light grinding combat, there is a bunch of 'bad guys' per game who feature the three classes that players can choose from (eg.: skeleton warrior, skeleton archer, skeleton mage) so it's mostly (if not always) a good idea to have a party featuring all three classes.

Overall, the game is very interesting and is a must have title for any MMO(RPG) fan. The game is free for levelling up to thirteen, but after that it will require some funds to be injected into your account (the cost is minimal). Platinum is the "pay-for" currency used in the in-game store and is fairly cheap for what's available.

While the graphical appeal of Pocket Legends isn't with the standards of current MMOs (or Infinity Blade), the gameplay surely makes up for it and you can literally spend hours at a time. Best of all, you aren't required to play constantly and is great for occasional pick-up-and-play instances. This could well lead to a revolution with 3D MMORPGs successfully coming to the mobile platform. It really is a big world in there.
