An iconic masterpiece.

I can't believe this game came out such a long time ago in 1988. I never owned the Sega Master System. Instead, we owned the NES. Luckily, in the late 80's and early 90's, I had a close friend who did indeed own the SMS. We spent many weekends renting those mostly unrented SMS games at the rental store. Most everybody owned the NES and those games were mostly rented out. One such game we rented was Phantasy Star. If we knew it was to be such a classic game, I think we would have rented it more and tried to actually beat the thing.

From what I remember way back then, we didn't do that very well. The battles were not easy and we really couldn't find our way around too easily. Not too bad for young kid, though!

It wasn't until much later, around 2001 or 2002, that I got around to playing the game again, this time on an emulator. There's just no way to find an SMS and a copy of the original game. This time, I was equipped with maps to aid in my adventuring. The gameplay was pretty good, with overhead for outdoors and a first-person perspective for the dungeons. For what it's worth, the game is enjoyable and is still worth playing, if only to appreciate the evolution in RPG's.
