You can count all the good movie tie-in games with your fingers, but when you do, include this king of the jungle...

It would be easy to dismiss this game. Heck it would easy to dismiss any movie licensed game, but when I saw this game at my local Game Stop for $5, I just had to pick it up. I remember there was just so much hype about this game when it first came out. Surprisingly, five years later, this game has aged remarkably well.

The first thing you'll notice is how great this game looks for a PS2 title. The draw distance is nice, the lighting is superb. To top it all off, on default, this game has no HUD, no reticule. The game's audio is on par with its visuals. It makes a lot of sense since you'll often hear your enemies before you see them. It all comes together to give you this sense that you're really on Skull Island, this huge undiscovered island filled with hostile natives, giant insects, carnivorous dinosaurs, and of course, Kong.

Of course with all the visuals, the aesthetics, it really wouldn't mean anything if the game doesn't play well. This game does :) The first person sequences cover most of the game. You'll run around as Jack, shooting things up, chunking spears at enemies. It's fun. Then there's the parts where you play as Kong. It's beast. You'll notice that the dinosaurs that were trying to eat you when you were playing as Jack are really no match for you anymore. You'll notice that you're not scared of them anymore. You'll notice that they're scared of you. I'M THE KING OF THE JUNGLE!!! RECOGNIZE. It's really too bad that there's not many of these sequences, even though it's still great fun playing as Jack.

The story portion of King Kong is slightly different from the movie. It seems as though Ubisoft took the main events from the movie and incorporated into the game but the sequence leading up to each and every one of these events were totally made up by the development team. It gives the game a distinct feel that's quite different from the movie, so people who's seen it can still have something to look forward to.

Yes, this game is old, but that actually played to this game's advantage. When it first came out, this game was worth no where near it's sticker price. With about 6 hours of gameplay, it's hardly worth more than the price to watch its movie tie-in, which was about 3 hours long. Now that you can pick it up for a few dollars at your local bargain bin, there's really no reason not to. I encourage you to try it.
