A very different take on, arguably, the most famous game of all time.

'Pac-Man Championship Edition DX' is not the Pac-Man you used to know. Sure it retains the whole, "eat up pellets until you clear the level while occasionally munching on some ghosts" style of gameplay. And that thrill of trying to beat your last score is still quite addictive. This version changes things up quite a bit. And while I wouldn't say I like it better than the classic game I grew up playing, it's definitely a fun idea and well worth your time.

Think of this game as the original Pac-Man on a crazy amount of steroids. Instead of having just a static maze that has four ghosts chasing you around in as you eat pellets, here you have an ever-changing maze with MANY ghosts chasing you. And those ghosts can be eaten for major points. You see, that is the hook of this new Pac-Man.

When you start a level, you go around and eat pellets like you always did. When you complete one side of a level, a fruit (or whatever item you are on) appears on the other side. If you go eat this item, then the side you were just on changes and more pellets are added. And you just keep going eating pellets, items, and racking up your score. Along the way, you will notice ghosts sleeping at certain spots in the maze. If you pass these ghosts, they will awaken and follow you. If you get a ton of these ghosts following you and you eat a power pellet, you can get quite the score bonus racked up by chomping up all those ghosts.

Obviously the goal here is to get the highest score possible. Pac-Man has never been rocket science and this version doesn't change that. The developers did do a nice job of implementing a new way to play Pac-Man without going to far away from the vision of the original. Sure it will feel weird to use a "bomb" to clear out a level of ghosts or when time slows down for you so you can narrowly escape getting eaten. But the fun of trying to rack up the highest score in a 5 or 10 minute period will erase any doubts you may have.

The game looks and sounds great. Overall, they did a nice job with the presentation. A big gripe I have with the game is that they didn't go a good job integrating the online leaderboards into the game. And some of the time-attack levels aren't that great, but most are still fun.

If you want a very fun new take on Pac-Man, I highly recommend this game. Trying to get a high score is still addictive as ever and you won't be disappointed with the presentation.
