Out Run is often wrongly described as a "racing" game. In reality, you're not racing against anything other than the clock. The designer, Yu Suzuki, classified Out Run as a "driving" game. On a side note, you may recognize Suzuki as the creator of the incomplete Shenmue series.

In Out Run, you control a man behind the wheel of a red Ferrari Testarossa convertible. There is a chick, presumably the driver's girlfriend, in the passenger seat. You start at a coastal area entitled Coconut Beach, and you must pass through checkpoints within a set time limit. At the time of its release, the game was unique in that it was possible to choose the stages in which the race took place, after you pass through the first checkpoint. Before every checkpoint, there was a fork in the road, allowing the player to choose which way to go. The game was very popular in it's time, both with arcade-goers and console players. This was despite the fact that Out Run was one of the first games to cost more than a quarter (that's 25 cents U.S.). Out Run was one of the first driving games to feature a 3D perspective, rather than a purely overhead perspective.
