Best racing game of its time hands down!

In a time where people thought games such as pole position were good racing emulations, Out Run was a state of the art arcade racing game that combined system 16 technology for sprite scaling and colorful graphics with a custom shifter/pedal arcade box that made the whole racing experience more real.

System 16 was a fantastic piece of hardware for its time. The 16-bit graphics capabilities introduced sprite scaling and a seemingly unlimited pallette of colors to enhance the visual experience. Couple that with a steering wheel that had rumble feedback, a 2 speed shifter knob and a gas and brake pedal on the floor and you had a virtual car at your control.

The game was fast paced (thankfully since you were driving a Ferrari!), and consisted of a 4-leg race which you could choose the course you wanted to take at the end of each leg. Each route gave the driver a beautiful backdrop of scenary to race through and a few exotic cars to pass along the way.

In many ways Out Run carved out the path that future racing games would take, converting the once dull low resolution racing games into a fully 3D racing experience. It was the first to bring cars and signs toward you with sprite scaling, at the same time masterfully zooming the backgrounds toward the screen with seemless redraw effects.

Long live the days of flat - out, straight track racing.
