User Rating: 8.7 | Orcs & Elves MOBI
I began Orcs and Elves as a skeptic and came out a true believer. I've never been a huge fan of turned-based games whether RPG's or strategy, but Orcs and Elves manages to fuse the old-school fun of the classic ID/Raven Software shooters like Wolfenstein or Hexen/Heretic with turn based play. In a nutshell, this mobile phone game subtly communicates more depth than many PC or platform RPG's with far less processing power at its disposal.

In Orcs & Elves you take on the role of a young half-elf named Elli who has travelled to a subterranean dwarven city (are dwarven cities ever above ground?) only to find that the place has been overrun by evil. In this case "evil" is an unholy alliance between Orcs & Dark Elves. Elli must navigate his way through various levels battling every monster in the book while growing ever more powerful and collecting the classic fantasy RPG arsenal of potions, armor and weaponry.

This would be a lonely journey, but Elli is accompanied by a magical talking wand named Ellon, who is a guide, translator and jester rolled into one. There are also NPC's to interact with including a moody female dragon named Gaya who sits on a massive collection of both standard and incredibly powerful potions and weapons that you will drool over until you finally collect enough gold to purchase them.

Orcs and Elves is not incredibly challenging but its not overly simply. At times, after cruising through a big chunk of dungeon you will unexpectedly find yourself outnumbered and facing some serious heat. I was especially impressed with how different types of monsters present different challenges. For example there are enemies who will eat nearby corpses to regain strength. Yet others disguise themselves as "friends" only to turn on you when you get too close. This is the sort of thing that made Orcs and Elves more challenging and interesting than it might have been.

If I have to complain about anything in the game its the sound, but its not a big complaint. I found the noises the enemies make a little annoying. In my opinion the sound effects don't add much to the game. On the other hand, they don't detract anything either. You could play without sound and still have fun.

Orcs and Elves won't be for everyone. Some people will be turned off by the graphics or the slower gameplay. I was playing the game on a newer phone so I can't say whether or not it would be less fun with the graphics turned down a notch or not.

My guess is, however, that if you liked any of the original ID classics and place a much higher premium on gameplay than graphics you will probably enjoy it regardless of your phone's capabilities.
