This game is nowhere near the defenition of "bad", not by a longshot!

User Rating: 8 | Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising PC
OFDR is an ambitious tactical first person shooter with enough to make up for its shortcomings. The weapons detail is superb to say the least, and some effects such as depth of field are used very well. The visuals are not breathtaking but they deliver for a game such as this, considering it's vast open island it performs quite well on modern day computers. For a simulation it does a fairly good job. The AI is good at times and can stand on its own for the most part. The squad commands are simple yet effective and the realistic ballistic effects and wound impacts are all handled nicely.

Where this game falls short is in its overall structure. The game wants to be a huge military simulation, but some core elements are left out. For example there is no lean, and the vehicles handle awkwardly, you cannot fly any planes and the huge island can feel repetitive at times. You can't custom tailor your equipment for each mission so you need to take enemy weapons or search for weapon crates. These things take away some realism from the game. Everything else in the game is quite compelling and fitting for the genre. The vast selection of weapons and possibilities is what makes this game shine. The mood it creates is believable and tense. Night and daytime effects are handled very well and you will be able to use a large selection of authentic military equipment.

Many great moments are to be found in the game, and with all the equipment at your disposal which you gradually will have a taste of, will ensure for an interesting and entertaining experience. It is imperative that we can have realism in a FPS game, rather the run and gun type which has become overused.
And with the addition of a easy to use mission editor the possibilities become endless, and lots of quality player created content can be found.

In my book any game that scores 8/10 is a solid effort! And OFDR is no exception. This game is nowhere near the defenition "bad", not by a longshot.
