Fun for fans of the genre

Look, this game isn't going to win any awards, but if you like turn based tactical strategy games then its very serviceable. I agree with GameSpot that the main real time strategy layer is underdeveloped and repetitive. You do frequently end up building the same few starting businesses over and over to develop an essential money stream in each scenario. Which really means there is a whole lot of content developed that never sees the light of day, sadly. It does seem to carry over some of your liked / feared rating and some starting cash based on how you did in the previous scenario, but in general each one is its own mini game, and that does give it a different, disconnected feel to it.

Where I depart from the professional reviews is in the combat. Yes, the cover placement is vexing and at times nonsensical. And yes, some character combat options are clearly inferior and thus underused. But in general I found myself enjoying most combat missions. I tried out different character and weapon combinations and found each of them distinctive and individually viable (though I hate revolvers). The character talents add a nice set of secondary options and depth, and I found myself mulling over individual perks at each level-up. The ability to respec a character for cheap money means that you can gravitate toward characters you like and respec them mostly into something useful to you. You can't turn a scrawny braniac into a melee machine or a bulky brute into a quick-shot gunslinger, but they can be molded in broad directions based on your choices.

I enjoyed the music and the voice acting, and most of the scenarios were pretty fun. Notably the DLC scenarios are in my opinion higher quality than the original main-storyline missions, so maybe they finally figured out how to flex the toolset. All in-all this was an enjoyable 20+ hour game for me which I picked up at bargain bin prices. If you like turn based tactical games and need something to fill in until Wasteland 2 finally releases, I'd say give Omerta a shot.
