The needish & the speedish

User Rating: 8 | Need for Speed Underground GC
The need for speed franchise goes underground. Underground being the world of car-tuning and illegal streetracing, just like in the movie "the fast & the furious". Like in that movie, here also you have to work your way up and gain a reputation. By winning races you advance in the game and earn money, which you can use to buy cars and most importantly tune them. A lot of this tuning is just about making your car look better, but it also makes your car faster. Some of the missions you have to accomplish are quite difficult for the average gamer so you need all the speed you can get.
The racing takes place in a fictional city by night. It looks great with the wet tracks and citylights. Personally i think it looks better on the gamecube then on the pc, but that's a matter of taste. Aside from the racing you also have to compete in drifting competitions and drag-racing. I found the drifting not particularly interesting, but once you find out how the hand-brake works it's not very difficult. The drag-racing is a lot of fun. You race on a straight line through the city. Who gets to the finish first in one piece wins. It all comes down to shifting gears at the right time and choosing the right lane. It's very cool!
When you are done with the career-mode the game has not much replay-value, but till then you have a good time. Also there are not that many racing games on the gamecube so i'm thankful the need for speed series didn't forget about it. If you are looking for a racing game on the cube with real cars you only have three choices: Need for Speed Underground, Need for Speed Most Wanted or Need for Speed Carbon.
Oh, the soundtrack is kind of hip hop/ urban. Luckily you can turn it off.
