It's been done many times before across multiple platforms, but Namco Museum Essentials is still a fun, affordable trip.

Namco did the arcade compilation thing long before it was considered cool. In fact, it all started with the Namco Classics collection for the original PlayStation that spanned five volumes. Namco Museum Essentials is basically what you would expect out of the Namco Museum franchise--only this time around, you get six games, trophies, unlockable prizes, and HD support.

The games included in the deal are Pac Man, Dragon Spirit, Galaga, Dig Dug, and two variations of Xevious--the original game and a completely remixed version known as Resurrection. Each game plays exactly as you remember it back in the arcade and in earlier incantations of the Namco Museum archives. Pac Man still plays wonderfully, and Galaga is as challenging as it was decades ago. And the games look even better in high-def, complete with nifty wallpaper that almost take after an arcade marquis.

Playing each of the games and fulfilling specific conditions will not only net you as many as 12 Trophies in addition to a Stamp Card system, but they can also unlock some cool prizes for use in the social networking software PlayStation Home, giving you some incentive to revisit the games. And, of course, there are online leaderboards--unfortunately, it is limited only to the friends you have registered on your buddy list, which is something of a downer especially if you were itching to prove your trigger-finger supremacy to the world.

My only other regret is that there aren't more games to play, or unlock for that matter. Still, for $10, you certainly do get your money's worth. If you've played the Namco Museum games before and own at least one copy of their compilation disc, you might be hesitant in considering the package unless you want to unlock the PlayStation Home prizes and get trophies. For everybody else who haven't had a chance to partake in the Namco Museum franchise, this is a fun, bite-sized chunk of their arcade catalog at a respectably affordable price.
