No incredible depth but a pleasantly quirky light-rpg with some fun times to be had.

User Rating: 7.3 | Musashi: Samurai Legend PS2
Musashi opens with a timeless story a mystic kingdom is under threat from a sinister millitant corperation and all hope seems lost so as the forces of evil draw close to take her prisoner a beautiful princess performs an ancient ceremony to summon a warrior from a distant land...and the summoned warrior just so happens to be Musashi trainee samurai and now last hope to save the day.

From Square Enix famous for Final Fantsy and other such RPG classics musashi offers a more light rpg...where by granted your character levels up with expierience and the player can assign attribute points to different areas to improve their character as they see fit...all the combat is directly controlled by the player as it would be in an action or platforming game, also for anyone really rpg-phobic the levelling up can be simplified by some time saving choices such as "I want to keep all my stats equal" or "I want to focus on attack power" etc.

Stylistically it's very anime based the intro movie is even a great little insanelu fast paced animated short that sets your state of mind for the cartoony slash em up adventure, Play is filled with some old favourites such as the old chestnut of collecting items that allow you to then pass some previously impassable object, opening new pathways and so on however there is one more unique gameplay element which was quite interesting, and that lies in the way the Musashi learns new battle techniques, when you lock on to an enemy Musashi's focus gauge fills up...this you can maintain as long as you stay close to enemy in question...if said opponent has a technique Musashi can learn pressing your attack button at the precise moment the learnable attack strikes you then the game freezes...enter the correct command as shown and Musashi copies the enemy technique adding it to his attack list...this slightly different approach of learning new techniques is refreshing and quite rewarding...entering a new area becomes a hunt for new enemies and new techniques.

Story wise its as you'd expect...rescue maidens and foil the plots of your enemies while Musashi becomes a poweful enough fully fledged warrior to take on the big boss and save the day.

Musashi succeeds in being a fun title however it's by no means life changing or top flight in any of the genres it touches upon the RPG element is a bit light for full fledged rpg fans...and the platforming and action isn't acomplished enough to topple the top games in that category either... and of the games that deliver a similar gaming expierience it never quite reaches the dizzy heights of Dark Chronicle, Legend of Zelda or Kingdom Hearts...what you do have here though is an easy to like quirky little adventure with likeable characters which is fun to play and lets face it who doesn't enjoy saving a princess now and then.
