On Mortal Monday the gaming community finally got their deserved chance of playing the brutal and controversial – it even got to the Senate- Kombat game at home. The brilliant arcade game rehashes the Street Fighter formula with digitized graphics and a helluvalot of gore – decapitations, blood, spines that get removed from the upper torso, ... Gamers everywhere got their video nirvana on this glorious Monday. Not only the Super Nintendo and Genesis owners could drool all over homicidal samurais, bodybuilder jocks and ninja’s. Owners of Game Boy and Game Gear got decent portable renditions. Both versions feature six Mortal warriors instead of seven. The Game Boy misses narcissistic Hollywood superstar jock Johnny Cage while Sega fans fight the whole Mortal family except one-eyed cleptomaniac Kano. The Game Boy version had three fighting arena’s while the Game Gear had only two: Goro’s dungeon and the pit. The Gear version looked better because of the color LCD screen, stronger processor and it also had more gore since Sega didn’t adhere to a strict censorship policy.
The controls are probably the worst aspect of this Game Gear port. Aside from this bitter pill, the game is pretty impressive considering the system’s hardware limitations. Sprites are huge and colorful. The sound could have used some vocal samples like the “fight” in GG MKII. The music still sounds threatening and oriental, which is a good thing.
In those days this was the best way of having Kombat in your Pocket.
