a handful of people on a leaky boat

Mortal Kombat was made because of the succes of streetfighter 2. Boon and Tobias, the creators of Mortal Kombat made more then just a clone. they added an oriental surrounding, used digitized animation instead of handdrawn, thought up a more simple but very effective control sheme and last but not least invented finishing moves...Mortal Kombat!
The game was supposed to be titled dragon fist, but at the last moment was changed into Mortal Kombat wit a "K". i don't know why it's spelled with a K.
Anyway, about the game. On the Snes version, there is no blood. Also when you launch a flying kick, you cannot turn in the air, making you more vulnerable then in it's sequel. The controls are all a bit slower and clumsier then in part 2, but part 2 is brilliant. This however is the game that started the whole MK-circus.
If you were to play this game nowadays, you'll still have a better time with it then if you were playing part 4, 5 or 6. There are only seven characters to choose from (Sonya, Kano, Sub-Zero, Scorpion. Liu Kang, Johhny Cage, Raiden, Reptile is hidden in the game) and it's all 2d, but it all comes down to timing and in the end only one stands....the essence of Mortal Kombat.
