Mortal Kombat is one of the most notorious titles in fighting game history. It was (probably) the first arcade game too feature such explicit violence and gore. It was definitely the first for the SNES back in the day. Now, Mortal Kombat 4 has taken the N64 into the realm of brutality with Mortal Kombat 4. Is it as good as the other games? Gameplay : You get too pick from many different fighters. Basically, you have too beat your opponent around until his life gauge is all gone. The fighters have 2 kicks of punches and two kicks of kicks (high, low). You can block your opponent's attacks, and you can charge towards him. You can jump, and do attacks in the air (both punches and kicks). Also, as with most fighting games, each character has their own set of special techniques for you too discover. They range from enhanced punches too flaming projectiles, and they all do different amounts of damage. Also, new too Mortal Kombat in this game, is the weapons. Each character has a hidden weapon (you can reveal it by hitting a combination of buttons). Once you have the weapon out, you are free you punish your opponent with it. You can even throw it at your opponent as well. In some levels, there are even giant boulders on the ground that you can pick up and toss at your enemy! There are many types of modes too play in this game. handicap, two vs two, tournament, and survival. All of them are unique and fun too play in. Graphics : Very nice. The character's animations are nice and not too blocky. I like the backgrounds as well, they are very dark and dreary, used perfectly for this dark game. The fatalities (finishing moves, usually involves dismemberment of some kind) are cool looking as well. I enjoyed finding out every character's fatalities. Sound : The music is cool. Very exciting at times, and dark and scary at others. It all suits the game very well. The normal game sounds are still great just like previous MK games, like Finish Him.

Personally, I don't like this game on one player mode. I don't find it that much fun. The computer enemies are too easy, and, quite frankly, kind of dumb. Its a lot more fun if you play against another friend. I love laying the smack down on my friend (he's never beat me once!). But that's just my personal preference. There is plenty of replay value in this game. Every character has their own special ending for when you complete the tournament mode with him/her. There are many cheats too discover. Players with a Gameshark may also want too try the ''Unlock Katana'' code. There is a lot too see and do in this game, which is a great feature. Are you a fan of the old Mortal Kombat games because i know i am? Get this game, it won't disappoint you. If your a fighter fan, you'll also want to pick this up. Not a fighter fan? still get it because it has a good amount of blood and gore! And if you didn't like the Mortal Kombat series before, this game will not change your mind about it.
